CONCERNED RACER

THIS IDEA ABOUT LIMITED TRAVEL CARS,COMBINING CLASSES,WEIGHTS,AND PRO CLASS IS A JOKE!!! WHAT IS A BIG BUDGET RACER?.OBVIOUSLY YOUR COMMENTS ARE OF ENVY RATHER THAN THE SPORT.THE CLASS STRUCTURE AT PRESENT WORKS FINE AT NATIONAL LEVEL,WE CAN NOT COMMENT ON STATE OR CLUB LEVEL DUE TO LACK OF COMPETION AT THAT LEVEL. WE HAVE TRAVELLED APROX 20000KLMS FOR OUR LAST 5 EVENTS.WE ARE NOT BIG BUDGET RACERS.

The only "Joke" is a head in the clouds (and I cleaned that up) attitude that fails to recognise that our great sport is far more than the national championship. You are of equal value to the young guy who spends two grand on a car & competes at club events only. Finally check your CAMS manual & find another catagory of racing car that has open slather regs other than engine capacity. Even F1 has restrictions.

Its true I am very jealous, I'm a lot older these days & never having been a big budget racer(although I feel sure I spent more money than I should have), I still enjoy this great sport of Off Road Racing & using this forum allows me to put ideas  & points  across that cross my mind from time to time  and it is interesting to see  the replies and other ideas put forward. The ideas are sometimes just ideas ,I wouldn't get to excited about to many of them.

State & Club racing  is as cuthroat  as it has always been, But we are always after new competitors to join up  & become part of our  fun, any of the Clubs in Australia would welcome anybody who wants to come & play with them.

Thanks for your ideas on the subjects,

I to am a budget racer, for us the sport is for fun only. Because of our car design it has not a great deal of wheel travel. We compete against cars with twice the amount. It can be unfair but the rule book lets this happen. I belive limiting cars in travel and all so the amount of enternal engine work would be great for the sport and competion. ALSO VERY JEALOUS

i think that the concerned racer has simple miss the piont , which is that our rules have not changed for a long time  and when the best shock was a o.m.e but the technoligy has push the cost of building a new buggy up. so now it would be a good time to even up the playing field and to keep as many buggies racing not only at club or state  but at national as well ,its not envy its just my opinion

Gotta agree with Stingray here - I still believe that club racing is the basis of all motorsport - without young guys starting in club racing alot of forms of lower exposed motorsport would die a quiet death (and being a sport not really kind to spectating we'll always be less exposed than we would want to be.)

We dont have the luxury to just concentrate on nationals only - budget classes (of whatever form) with restricted rules have to exist or the young guys wont ever be competitive in class and they'll wander off to somewhere where they can be competitive for the same or lower budget.  Trail bikes for example.

You may not be a big budget racer (but 20,000km towing in 5 races seems that it would be out of reach for most budget racers) but how competitive are you in nationals?  Please note that this is an honest question, Im not having a go?

And why the secrecy behind the name?

I think we also should be looking at the safety of the sport as well, i.e Should be wearing FIA approved race suits not overalls and Nomex lined Helmets, not those stupid dirt bike helmets. I think CAMS should look at the rules and do some thing about it not very professional.

Why don't you identify your self. Now let me explain myself, I've crewed for a few sprintcar teams over the years and seen some BIG wrecks. I've also seen a driver trapped in he's sprint car whilst it was engulfed in flames. At the time he was only wearing a two layer nomex suit and a helmet without nomex lining. He got burn't bad. I'm not picking on any body here, It's just that i don't want to see any body get seriously hurt i think that would hurt the sport. Yes there is cheap nomex lined helmets out there and yes there is cheap nomex race suits out there. May be now you can understand where i'm coming from.

Cheers for now

Dont worry about them mate remember. the type of helmet and race suit you get depends on how much you are willing to spend for your life. We have got the best gear and are about to invest in the HANS device. Not because we have lots of money to spend but simply because we want to live if we ever had a bad accident.

cheers

I think its a matter of choice.  Some people prefer to use a cheap helmet because they only run a few times a year, or because they only navigate a couple of times a year on weekend licenses for a bit of fun and to help out a mate.

We chose more expensive gear because we race fairly often, but if those guys out there that run on a shoestring want to use a bike helmet and overalls, then they know the risk, they accept it, they race with it.

Its the $10 brain $10 helmet theory, but I certainly dont think that forcing people to do it would be good thing for the sport.

im not shore if the hans device is the right way to go with head restraint, i did a little research on other types from what i can gather the hans collar is a hard carbon piece and you mite have prolems with it rubbing at the base of the neck also the collar is only held in by belts that go over your shoulder so you mite have to get belts with a sternum latch ,i also looked at a restraint that simpson make that you ware like a haness so if you move in relation to the belts it stops your head from moving in relation to your body . now the two ifs hear are that cams have not aproved it ( maybe by now they have) and im no expert on the matter .

well we are not full ball on it either but from what we can understand is that hans also make the strap system aswell as when we were in the States at the Laughlin race we spoke to a few Trophy truck teams and they said that the strap system was the way to go. the othe rthing about it being CAMS approved. Well the thing is if they arent cams approved then heres a few questions. Why arent they cams approved? If we do get them and they arnt approved then what will happen if we wear them? Will they void our insurance or whats the deal?

As I said we are just looking into it and are really careful when it comes to safety. On another subject.

What sort of fire systems do you guys run? We ahve the usual fire extuingsher(sp) and then we have the 1.5 bottle which runs through 2 spray systems to the motor and the cabin.

the way i think it is that at a fia event the hans device is only approved, but a all other events you can use other devices with the simpson harness the pegs that go into the helmet have to be fitted by you there new helmets have the holes already drilled ,so you have to drill you old helmet witch im told is ok if its snell approved . maybe you should speak to someone at cams or your scrutineer.
