The only issue with regard to eligibility in Aus will be engine size. Find out what size engine its got and you have your answer. If its a water cooled class 10 it will be 1650 but if it is VW it will be bigger. I think 2 valve water cooled motors might also be allowed to be bigger than 1650
SCORE class10 as per description in dirtsports mag---
Single or two-seat buggies limited in engine size. There are three different limiting motor choices per configuration, including VW air cooled and honda or toyota powerplants.

Hope this helps and I dont get in trouble for copywrite!
l have a new class 10 chassis being built at the moment to run pro-lite and l have had to get a couple of the cross braces changed to suit our regs, if you can get a detailed set of photos sent of the frame you should be able to tell. As everyone has said yes the motor sizes are within class regs but some of the bar work is different. l have seen one frame that under the front leg of the roll hoop there was no bar under the mid rail, there was diagnal braces but no continuation of the roll hoop. The class 10 size car is perfect for Aus racing for any class. Have a look at www.race-dezert.com go to the forum pick shop and have a look at show and tell at new class 10 to get a good idea how they go together. All the builders who want peaple to see thier new cars post there.
http://www.desertrides.com/features/vehicles/index.php Theres a whole bunch of different cars with heaps of photos here. There is one class ten with a different (I think thats the word!!) roll bar
The new car is being built by Frantzco but it is a car that almost wasn't. We paid a deposit on it about 18 months ago now and thought we lost it until they were guilted into building it by the better business bureau in thier state and a bit of help via the race-dezert forum. It will go from them to FOA for a set of thier coilovers and bypass shocks and a proto-type set of thier midboards and front 2" hubs. The frame is all chromoly as is the arms and has thier fuel tank mounted with alloy panels. All up with the brake packages and shocks it will be just under $20,000.00 landed and taxes paid. We have the rest of the parts already except motor and computer so we hope to be at Hyden next year in pro-lite but if all else fails we will put in our Toyota V8 and run at the back of pro class. We are also toying with the idea of slotting in a 2.5 all alloy turbo nissan diesel for the for the what the factor but time will tell. We would like some comment from you guy's about what you all think about the pros and cons with this power plant but our main reason to do it would be sponsorship dollars.
Thanks for the run down. What are the taxes - GST + duty? or just GST? Also what are the shipping costs(if you don't mind telling everyone) and how did you go about organising the freight side of things. Thanks in advance.
I might be able to help here. I work in the customs industry (I work for Australia's largest privately owned freight forwarder/logistics company/customs broker). I have looked into this in the past.
If you bring in a chassis, with no engine or gearbox, there is a duty rate of 5% and GST. If the car has a gearbox, or a gearbox and engine, the duty rate is 10%.
To calculate these costs, you take the purchase price (in AUD$), and add the price of the freight plus insurance. You then add the duty rate to this figure. YOu take this total and then add 10% GST. This gives you your final total.
If anyone is interested in importing something, I would be happy to try to help them out if possible. I can't make any promises on what freight rates, etc might be applicable, this would have to be calculated on a per shipment basis.
Why is there duty on a US made chassis when we currently only pay GST on hubs and shocks etc provided they are listed as being US made. I can understand the complete car as it might be considered differently but a chassis is only parts especially if it was unassembled.

Trekka is spot on as he would be with the figures although with a ranger class5 that l shipped early this year l shipped with one of those multi car shipping companys and with all taxes, duties and frieght it cost $4000.00 all up. With the frame we have coming in we have organised with a company who imports American utes and booked the un-used space above the trays so it will be hung from the roof basicaly and are getting it in for half of what the first car cost. Shop around for frieght and think outside of the box.
Sorry, that is right. I forgot about the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement, which is aplaicable provided that all the correct documentation is provided.
Something to think about is who will look after the car/transport car/pack the car into the container etc in the states. You could be putting a lot of trust in people you dont know! Unless you have contacts over there, it may be easier to use an Aussie company that does this stuff. Also dont forget about insurance on top of the duties etc. Also heard that the free trade agreement only covers what is solely made in the states (ie tyres might be made in japan, so duty will need to be paid on them). I imported my car 3 years ago & found it was easier to pay the duties, so hopefully things might have been simplified now. It might be worth talking to people like Ian Boyd (BMP), and Cameron Ritchie (Racer Imports), as they organise these things and have contacts.
