how much of a kombi can i use


as part of muy buggy build i have been looking for parts and i think i have hit a jackpot.

i have found a 76 kombi with a 2lt box and an ea82 subaru engine that has been rebuilt. now i can get the whole lot for less then i can buy  a kombi box.

my question is can i use the rear beam etc and front beam etc etc. can you buy  long travel arms ect that will fit.


sorry for the questions there will be more as i get all the parts together.

William you could use the gearbox, axles, cv's, half shafts and motor. As for front beam and torsion housing look for a beetle wreck in a back yard paddock ect you should find one pretty cheap and look through the classifieds on this site or offroadracing.com for parts and place wanted ads as most guys will have the parts they have replaced on thier cars on shelves in boxes ect so you might get a bargain along the way.
The best advice l could give you is look for a complete buggy for a first car and learn from that before you build one.

People used to use kombi front ends years ago, they held up well from memory (this was before combo stubs etc). Just watch the travel so you dont pop the ball joints. I think you could buy a 'fitting kit' from unicap, which was basically brackets for your steering arms and shock mounts etc. The heavier torsion bars also saved some money on sway aways.
Rear suspension torsion bars worked well, but the arms would bend, and also the stub axle bearing carriers (cast metal) would tend to break...so you could use the torsion bars/housing, but best fit different arms.
 As for buying long travel arms, I dont think anyone would do that now, you will probably need to fabricate your own.
 But as Boss said, maybe just a cheap buggy to get started, then dream yourself your own design later on (like 260 was going to do!)

Hi Will. Jones has got a good point. our car cost $4500 as a very well used car in '02, it took 13 weeks (although Slow allways builds his cars in 3 months) & another $4000 to get it to race prep. since then it has done about 7 or 8 races a year & apart from 1 engine change & a few shocks & cv's, it has allways (nearly) finnished every race. It has now got over 100 races in the log book & yes I'm dreaming up new designs all the time (gunna gunna etc )  but it still does a good job with no headaches. Simple & cheap is really a good way to start . If you buy something old make sure it was built with good bits, (arms, stubs etc) you will need to do a lot of cleaning & painting but worth it.

widened kombi front end with standed front arms and ball joints ran 1st in class and 4th outright at Warialda,car also runs standed kombi back tube and torsion bars with RHS arms we made ourselves

it would appear that you can use all of a kombi, there was one racing class 5 (production 2wd) in WA at the Gas Dash a while back

i should have been more clear won't be fabing a frame yet i'm looking at a road trip to taree in two weeks time to pick up an old frame with log book from 936 as per my wanted  in classifieds. smile so i will be building it up from there so not going to re invent the wheel but have to find new suspension.brakes,etc etc.

i can't really buy a complete ready to go car as the buject doesn't work like that.

i figure i have a few months before the next seaon and i'm sure that will be enough time to get it done.

well anyone it looks like i will be buy the kombi i think it's worth it just for the rebuild ea82 subaru engine the adapter and 2lt box with shafts etc.

my first engine to kill will be a subaru ea82  and 2lt box.(i will be on the look out for a new gearset and diff for this in the next few months)

when you come to see 936 you can see 136 which is the old 936 in 136 shed as 936 works for 136 confused yet wait till you get here then we will totally confuse you.See you in a couple of weeks.

I'm confused & I'm one of them.................. I think..........
Actually, to confuse even more, the frame in question was 196 last year.
So to recap, William is interested in purchasing 196 from 936 who works for 136, 936 used to own 136 but it was then 936, later becoming 136 due to rule changes. 136, owned by 136, which used to be 936, owned then by 936, is the car with all the kombi gear in it, The kombi gear has been in it for a very long time and as the Warialda results show, the car does very well.
Frame 196, Car 136, car 577, car 546, under construction car 163 & at present car 372 are all stabled at the same place.
No wonder I'm always tired.

Congratulations Mick (KMORC 136 now) on your great result with a fourth O/R at Warialda.
Bit late but I still can't find any results anywhere. (Saturdays were up on Saturday night, then nothing-------!!)
Thank you 936 for making the history of 136-196-936-577-546-163-372 so clear.
