CAMS Off Road Driver Development Program

For the first time Off Road Racing has been included in the succesful CAMS Driver Development Program. This is exciting news and a wonderful opportunity for some of the young stars of off road racing in Australia and is further recognition that off road racing is being acknowledged as a significant part of the professional development of motorsport in Australia.

The following press release gives further detail and the selection criteria and nomination forms are available on the CAMS website.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CAMS is giving Australia's most promising young drivers the opportunity of a life time to attend the Australian Institute of Sport as part of the CAMS Driver Development Program in 2008.

In addition to the already successful Women's and Rally Programs, for the first time Off Road drivers will also be able to nominate for a place in the newly established Off Road Driver Development Program.

"The decision to include an off road element into the broader CAMS Driver Development Program will be a huge shot in the arm for off road and it being recognised on the bigger stage," said Australian Off Road Commission Chairman, John Paterson.

Launched in 2004 following a successful pilot year in 2003, the programs are designed to facilitate the development of Australia's most promising young rally, off road and female motor sport competitors.

The self-nomination approach has again been chosen to encourage Australia's young driving talent to be proactive in the pursuit of their motor sport careers.

Past program participants include Formula 3 driver Leanne Tander, as well as current Australian Rally Championship competitors Molly Taylor, Eli Evans and Brendan Reeves.

Each driver wishing to nominate for the 2008 programs must meet specific assessment criteria including age, past driver performance and demonstration of an interest in pursuing an international career.

The successful 2008 squad members will be announced in mid-November, which will be followed by training camps at the Australian Institute of Sport in February and June 2008. The camps will focus on elements of nutrition, physiology, psychology, strength and conditioning and media training.

The nomination deadline is Friday 2 November 2007. For further information on the selection criteria and to download the 2008 nomination forms, please visit www.cams.com.au/go/sportsdev.

CAMS would like to thank the Australian Sports Commission for their continuing support of CAMS' Driver Development Programs.

This would have to be some of the best news l have heard in a long time. When l started some 21 years ago as a 16 year old there was no way you would have thought about trying to make a profession of this sport but with the Aus safari, the huge rally raid series overseas, the multipul U.S offroad and stadium series and the many other cross over series l have neglected to mention the future looks great for the up and comers. There are numerous national level competiters and a staggering amount of state level guys and girls who always get told they can go a long way in this sport but now the can get the training to suceed in thier attempts so l say thank you to all that have helped our sport recieve this recognition.

They have always known that we exist, it's just that we have largely been ignored!!! But this is a very good development for our discipline of motorsport and those chosen will benefit greatly from the opportunity.

From CAMS:

2008 CAMS Driver Development Squad selected
CAMS Media Release
23 Nov 2007
Following a successful self-nomination process for the 2008 CAMS Rally, Off Road and Women's Driver Development Programs, ten of Australia's most promising young motor sport competitors have been selected to attend two specialist training camps at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

Applicants for each of the three programs had to meet specific assessment criteria including strong previous performance and a desire to pursue an international motor sport career.

For the first time since the inaugural camp in 2003, the program includes three of the most promising names in Off Road racing, which Australian Off Road Commission Chairman, John Paterson, is thrilled about.

"This initiative recognises Off Road racing on the main stage of motor sport and whilst I feel confident that our guys will be champions of the future, the program will play a key role in enabling them to manage the pressures along the way," said Paterson.

The volume and quality of applicants for the 2008 programs was very impressive and despite some difficult decisions during the selection process, CAMS believes that every person in the squad has what it takes to progress to the international level.

The 2008 CAMS Women's Driver Development Program consists of the following squad members:
Victoria Whitley (Qld) - Karting / Circuit
Molly Taylor (NSW) - Rally
The 2008 CAMS Rally Driver Development Program consists of the following squad members:
Paul Batten (Vic)
Glen Raymond (Vic)
Mitchell Hall (SA)
Nathan Quinn (NSW)
Brenton Kaitler (Vic)
The 2008 CAMS Off Road Driver Development Program consists of the following squad members:
Travis Milburn (SA)
Daniel Brown (Vic)
Beau Robinson (WA)
CAMS CEO, Graham Fountain, has commended the squad members for their outstanding individual achievements to date and expressed his support for their continued development.

"The CAMS Driver Development Programs are a fantastic opportunity for each of these worthy participants to not only develop their individual skills applicable to the sport, but also enhance their personal whole of life skills. We look forward to their ongoing affiliation with CAMS, continuing to work with them and wish them all the best of luck for the year ahead and hearing about their experiences at the AIS."

The intensive two-day camp will take place at the AIS in Canberra in mid February, with each of the groups scheduled to attend a follow-up camp in June. The AIS program focuses on elements of nutrition, physiology, psychology, strength and conditioning, and media training at an elite level.

CAMS would like to thank the Australian Sports Commission for their support of the programs in 2008.

CAMS Off Road Driver Development Program PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 September 2008
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) is pleased to announce the inclusion of up and coming Off Road talents Clayton Chapman and Luke Erceg into the inaugural CAMS Off Road Driver Development Program squad.

Chapman (17), who displayed an incredible performance at Round 4 of the Australian Off Road Championship (AORC), the PWR Sunraysia 500 by winning the Production 4WD class is excited about his inclusion in the squad.

I am really looking forward to attending the next camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) next month says Chapman. My inclusion in the squad couldnt have come at a better time. Now that I have proven that I am capable of an event class win I really want to take my driving to the next level and I am sure the AIS camp will assist me in doing this.

Erceg , a 25 year old South Australian resident is equally as excited about his inclusion in the program. This is a great start to our 2009 season, the Driver Development Program is something that I have been keen to be a part of since it was first spoken of he said. I know that I will learn a lot from my experience at the AIS and am certain that the specialist training and activities will assist me in my racing career from herein.

Chapman and Erceg will join fellow squad member Travis Milburn as the AIS in Canberra from September 15-17 2008 where they will focus mainly on elements of nutrition, strength and conditioning and media training. The squad will also take part in physiological testing with AIS staff and attend one on one psychology sessions with de Prazer consulting.

CAMS would like to thank the Australian Government via the Australian Sports Commission for its continuing support of CAMS Driver Development Programs

I am really pleased to see these 2 guys, young Clayton and Luke, included in the program.

Clayton Chapman has been a bit of a revelation in off road racing in Queensland, he is an extremely talented young driver, a very likable young man and i believe he has a very good future in motorsport. His recent result at Mildura where he beat Geoff Pickering in Production 4WD was a tremendous result, but not unexpected if you have followed his progress in off road racing.

Luke Erceg is about to embark on a campaign in 2009 with a brand new Chenowth Pro Class car with LS1 Chev and will be amongst the front runners in next years AORC.

Along with Travis Milburn, who is already in the CAMS Off Road Driver Development squad and is an excellent example of the merits of this Program, i am confident that these 3 guys will represent off road racing extremely well.

Future Off Road stars shine at AIS
24 Sep 2008

After three challenging days at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the CAMS Off Road Driver Development squad have returned to their home states to concentrate on increasing their fitness levels and work on other strategies to maximise their individual abilities on the track.

Travis Milburn (25), Luke Erceg (25) and Clayton Chapman (17) make up the squad who travelled to the AIS in Canberra last week. The group participated in physiological testing, a media skills workshop and met one-on-one with a Sports Psychologist amongst other activities.

Although the program is made up of three very long and physically-demanding days, the group remained completely focussed on developing their skills during their stay.

"I had a fantastic time at the AIS. I learnt a lot about my body, fitness level and the many components that I can work on to give me a competitive edge," said Erceg.

"I will definitely be doing everything I learnt in those three days to increase my fitness level between now and the next camp, should I be selected, and also to aid in our assault of the 2009 National Championship."

The squads youngest member, Queenslands Clayton Chapman, has had a remarkable year in 2008 achieving his first Australian Off Road Championship Production 4WD class win at the Sunraysia 500, as well as being selected for the Off Road DDP.

Its been a great year for me and we have achieved a lot more than we expected to in 12 months, Chapman said.

The facilities at the AIS were very impressive. We had a lot of fun and learnt a lot at the same time.

Amongst many other things, the squad learnt the importance of hydration and the negative effects that dehydration can have on their concentration levels therefore affecting their driving skills. The squad was also treated to practical recovery sessions in the AIS new recovery centre where the trio alternated between a 14-degree plunge pool and a 38-degree spa pool following intense training sessions.

"The recovery sessions were a real eye-opener for us all," said Erceg.

"We all knew that exercise and fitness were important for endurance racing, but had no idea that the recovery would be such a benefit in between sections and after a long race. Although it was painfully tough to slide into the plunge pool, we all felt a lot better and revived after each recovery session."

South Australian Milburn, the only member to attend the camp previously, was pleased to be back at the world-class facilities after a season of highs and lows in the AORC.

The camp has been tailored for drivers, and the staff at the AIS in conjunction with CAMS has definitely been doing their homework on what it is that we need from these camps. he said.

Every lecture that we attended was relevant to us as off road drivers, and the knowledge that we have gained from these is invaluable. I certainly hope to be back next year and will focus on increasing my fitness levels in the off season.

The three young drivers will now focus on finishing their respective seasons on a high note before putting all their commitment into their 2009 championship attacks.

CAMS would like to thank the Australian Government via the Australian Sports Commission for its continuing support of CAMS Driver Development Programs.
