Turbo (TH) 400 to LS1 (Gen 3)

OK so everybody was right, you can bolt a TH400 to an LS1 motor, but thats it.
The torque converter does not reach the central locating hole in the middle of the flexiplate. The bolt holes are not the same on the crank to put the old flexiplate on. The holes are not quite the same to match the TC to the LS1 flexiplate. There are various torque converters in US to do the job. Any helpfull hints here in AUS?

Yes WOLF it is for the vette, new aushocks all round and a Gen 3. Maybe I need a younger driver!! just get the vette finished, then work out who drives. Class 4 no Navigator.
I am retired, so it is full time in the workshop.

Mike,
I can only assume the LS1 and LS2 have the same bolt patten. With the LS1 only 5 of the bolts can be used. The 4 on the horizontal each side of the dowells and one at the top.
Aaron McClintock made a clamp for his, to take in the top bolt hole which does not exist on the TH400.
The yanks say that this is plenty of bolts for up to 700hp.
I have made my own bolt through engine mounts and have kept them well forward so the weight of the engine is positive at the top.
The torque converter.
The bolt patten does not match by 1/2 a hole but a chain saw file fixes this.
Then the crankshaft locating spigot does not reach the TH400 torque converter so,
If you were in the US of A you would just buy a special torque converter (TCI Street fighter)
which matches the TH400 to LS1/2 or longer flex bolts in a kit that has an extension flange that goes on the flex plate (GM part no 12551367 , 12563532, and 12563533 which do not exist from Holden) or in OZ a cut and shut of the 2 converters.
Aaron sold me a cut and shut that he previously used.(Dont forget the 1 mil clearance)
In US of A you can buy the TH400 housing that has all of the bolt holes.
My opinion on high stall is why would you waste 1000rpm of brute torque. I will run the standard stall. All of the above is hipothetical as I have not run mine yet!!!!

Thanks for the info guys..... Not planning on running a big stall if any at this stage. But putting a cam in the engine so may have to run some stall to get off the line a bit harder and get to the first corner first at stadiums..... lol

I would recommend running a mimimum of 2000RPM stall even with a relativly stock motor, it helps with launching and drive out of corners and if your running a spool/locker of any kind it will make the car easier to drive.

The higher stall will help keep you final drive ratio sensible as well, as you will get the launch you need with out having to run to low a gear ratio.

Example: standard stall - 4.88:1 with a 2K - 2.5K stall you would run a 4.54:1 (Caveat, of course your stall may need to be higher depending on how aggressive your cam is)

Thats just my 2 cents worth.

Mike,
I just got a TH400 converter made up with hd internals, about 2000 stall and bolts straight up to the ls1 flex plate without spacers or filing. Cost $660 from torque converter technologies 03 95741499

Cheers for the help guys, i will be looking into the contacts that you guys have supplied. Custom converter it is, i am getting the specs on the cam at the moment, so will be able to work out the stall then. But by the sounds of it, it will be between 2500 and 2800 rpm.

One thing ot be mindful of is the bigger the stall the more heat it will generate.

we had a trans temp issue with chris`s truck (pro 440) then we fitted a bigger tranny cooler with twin fans and shrouds and now it runs fine with a 2800 stall. So we think we will have that sorted on my truck....
