Having been out of the sport for a few years and after selling my race jeep i am keen to get back into it but this time i either want a baja or a karman ghia to go Class 4 in. I have tried to chase down 2 karman ghia up here in Qld but they have been destroyed so i was wondering if anyone knew of any others that may be sitting idile. Also a baja that is either complete or needs a bit of work. any leads would be greatly appreciatted
check out hte classifies on the main site - there are a couple of cheap baja's going. both look like they need some work, but might be what you're after.

Good to hear that someone is coming back to offroading.
Why dont you consider a class 2 or 3?
There is always quite a few up for sale on the offroad sites, and you get to RACE against several other cars, as it seems up in QLD that there are always a few 2s and 3s campaigning most races.
The cost of upkeep on a 4 would be the same as either of these as they use the same basic components.
The idea of earning a place against a competetive field, rather than racing against yourself sounds a lot more enticing to me.
You can buy a car & race in class 1,2,3 or 9 or any class for that matter & still run for outright position.
The guys that have spent thier money getting a car to run in the Class they prefer would probably be interested in your results to see if what you say is backed up by commitment on your behalf.
Myself, I'm getting a little older these days,so ,the faster I was, but I still like to keep them honest, money still seems to slow me down a lot as well, hence the number of events I can attend but I still enjoy my Offroad racing & I have run in class 2 now since it started. My son however started with a baja cast off we used to take to the beach to play with, it was duly converted to a race car & he has had an affection for the class ever since,I wish I could keep up with that bloody PINK VW & I'm sure there are a lot more like me around that would love to be able to prologue & finish in the top ten in most races .
AAAAAHHHH! its sad to be such a proud father, still, bring along your class whatever to any race meeting and play chasings with the rest of us,We'll chase anything.
Sorry I got carried away, one of the reasons for picking a class like 4,5 7 or 8 is that that they are different from the others & easier to sell to sponsers & that helps to keep these cars in the sport and people from outside our sport relate to these vehicles more than they do to buggies.
We need all the help we can get, don't you think, still playing chasings at our age.
1) Talk people out of entertaining the thought of going into that class
2) Make it so that there has to be a min number of cars entered in the class for it to continue to be recognised (this was used very effectively to kill the class previously as who would build a new car for a class that may not exist next year?)
3) Tell people "why would they want to race a class with no other competitors to race against?" (even though the class may be just what they personally like & they might enjoy the challenge of racing against the clock and beating previous personal efforts)
4) The nail in the coffin would be to amalgamate a fairly cheap competitve class with numerous limitations with another type of car with the only limitation, besides the engine not being allowed to cross the mid point of the vehicle, is that it has to resemble some sort of car with your eyes squinting into the sun at the right angle.
Personally I love my Baja & the challenge of going as fast as I can in it. The style of the baja is an all round favourite (to most people). The restriction to the baja keeps the expense down a lot. The baja automatically makes any race fun. There is also the challenge of doing well against the better represented classes, not to mention the satisfaction of seeing the disbelief of some people who think that their competitive class of car couldn't possibly be beaten by an inferior, shall we say less competitive class of car.
In summing up, let me get something else off my chest, so I don't grow even more cynical... can anybody tell me why class 4, sorry - bajas, was the only 'low entry numbers' class to be "fixed", when in the years it was on trial there were other classes with less competitors running in them?.... I guess there wasn't enough political gain from the baja class.
Bye for now,
One cut snake...

The reason for going class 4 is simple. the cars have style and as said before a bit easier to gain sponsorship because you have something different. i raced a class six for years and at times i was the only one in my class so that is why i simply tried to beat the class 1,2,3 and eveyone else for that matter and on the right track i did. just ask laurie sevenson who lost a bet that i dould beat him in his old class nine. Itried to run a class 8 jeep for a while but the funds simply ran out and after spending $2000 a race it got to much
I am not going to go out a be ultra competitive because i don't have the budget for that. I love my VW's and that is what i want to go with and i am looking for ward to the enjoyment aand freindship that i used to find a race meets.
So now that my post has been hijacked WHO HAS AN OLD CLASS 4 OR KARMAN GHIA FOR SALE OR LYING IN THE BACK YARD THAT IS FAIRLY CHEAP
