Next week Imove into a new home. It has a decent sized shed which I will be looking to set up as a work shop.
I have hand tools pretty well sorted but I am thinking I will need a welder if I am going to do any buggy work down the track.
I have no real idea about welding, what sort of welder should I be looking for and what specs should I look for overall.
Note : I will not be welding up a buggy straight away obviously, but I want the welder to be able to do it, even if it means I get some one else in to use it on the important stuff!
Not 100% sure. Have seen a big range in price on welders. Obviously I don't want to waste money, but I don't want to buy something cheap then find out that it doesn't meet my needs.
Thinking MIG (was even looking at arc, but think MIG gives a few more options). I have done a bit more research and thinking I will be looking more around the $1000 mark.
What sort of amperage (is that even a word? :)) do I need to be looking at for welding together a buggy frame? What other specifications should I keep an eye out for. Like I said, very little idea about welding, but how better to learn than to give it a go!
Am thinking 130 amp should be good for welding most things, apparently that is good for a 3mm butt weld which is enough for most work as far as I can tell.
Only possible issue I see is if I decide to fillet weld a couple of 12mm plates or something like that, would 130 amps get me through?
12mm plate would make the little fella stuggle a bit even with a 3 run fillet. Best bet is to check the duty cycle you dont want it to low as you will be stopping to often to let it cool down. About the 1200 mark will get you a all around welder that will handle 12mm plate easy.
