BIG OFF-ROAD ACHEIVEMENTS

After O.B.R.'s very impressive Baja effort, I was wondering what other achievments Aussie off-roaders may have made on a big scale?

I recall a great looking XF ford ute that I think ran baja twice (maybe late 80's), but dont remember details and hav'nt seen the ute around.

Was it the Aust Safari that Ian Irons ran a class 2 buggy as the 'flying pieman' in the eighties?

And I think also built for the safari was Bill Croft's road registered class1 buggy, which apparently did very well!

 Anyone have any more details/stories?

As far as I know, the Falcon Ute is now in the National Motor Racing Museum at Bathurst.

Just out of interest i recently saw Jim Hunter at Eastern Creek racing a WRX in the Australian Manufacturers Championship. Is that his suspension shop in Blacktown ? I love the head lights bet you could see for miles with them in BAJA.

I heard rumours that Jim Hunter co-drove Tony Guy's rivvy at Milbrodale a couple of years back. Rumours only though.

Offroad successes, how bout a near miss? Bob Mowbray allllmost winning the aus champs in a class 3 in 87? 88?

Well i think my dads effort was bloody good enough for off road achievements. In 1983 my dad drove 1970 mk 1 escort with narrowed falcon suspension and xw motor to 1st in class 6 in the ARB Macleay 1000.What makes this achievement great is that dad built the car in the backyard on a shoe string budget and beat the big tyre sponsered vehicles,bf goodrich and goodyear.Dad has the trophy in the lounge 4 first in class but was only ever recongnised for 3rd in class in the year book and the media at the time. in my opinoin thats a great effort.

That Falcon ute has entered Finke many times as well as racing at Alice Springs local club events.
It was sold and put in the museum a few years ago.

It's a small world, I was just taking to a family friend after my father inlaw passed away cry and got taking about cars. It turns out his name was John Bradley and he was responsible for building Jim Hunters Falcon as well as a huge number of other offroad racers, road and drag cars. He's retired now but building a 2000hp twin turbo infinity V8 drag car for a bit of fun. He even had a look at my class 2 and made a few good suggestions regarding seat belt mounts and suspension geometry. no
