Travel insurance to compete in America

Hi everyone,

I was hoping someone on this forum could help me out with a problem I have.  I am travelling to America to compete in a race soon, and I am having trouble finding travel insurance that will cover me during the race.  I understand you should have to pay more to cover the increased risk, but I simply haven't been able to find anyone that is interested.

I really don't want to go without, because in the chance something goes wrong, medical gets very expensive very quickly over there, and it does not seem that the organiser offers coverage like CAMs do here.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Ben

The OBR guys did Baja, they may know. They are doing safari at the moment so may not be reading the forum.

I doubt travel insurance will cover the racing part of the trip, I would think that you would need to take out some form of other insurane to do that. Travel insurance normally only covers the activites that most holiday makers undertake.

Thanks guys, I'll stay tuned for any further updates.

Trekka, I understand what you are saying and would be happy to take out 2 forms of insurance, I simply can't find anyone who knows about the race one.

Might be an idea to speak with the orgainsers of the race you are planning to run in, they might be able to help you out. You would also need a US racing licence wouldn't you?

Hi Ben,

Seen this on Pirate and Outers, Best of luck mate.

The ski race guys use a private broker to most of theres as any large company dosent want to touch it.

If there no luck let me know and I'll see if I can find a contact in the states for you.

Cheers Nick

Trekka, I will be talking to the organisers tonight and will see if we can go under their insurance.

It's a Best in the Desert race, and it doesn't seem I need a license, all I need to do it pay membership and entry fees.

Neither BITD or SCORE (who run Baja) are FIA sanctioned, so the linkage with CAMs does not give any insurance (I'm not a member anyway, but I looked into it).

Nick I'll drop you a msg to get those contact details as I've had no luck.

In case anyone is interested, we are taking a rock crawler in a 1000 mile desert race.  Crazy.  It's the new Ulta 4 Class (4400) for 'King of the Hammers' style vehicles.  Normal safety rules and must have operational 4WD.

Specs on our car are LS1, 4L60, 4 speed 4WD transfer case, 9 inch diffs, rear spool 40 spline chromos, front air locker with 35 spline.  Full chromo frame, Fox coil overs.  In the desert it will run 37 inch BFG Baja Projects.  In the pics it has 40 inch Brawler KRTs which are a mix between the Baja and the rock crawling tyre.

It's going to be an awesome race.  Thankfully we are in the sportsman group at the back of the pack, so hopefully we won't be punted by any angry trophy truck
