Hi Trendsetters, After meeting Garry and the Oztruck guys at the Finke I've got the bug and stepped up from dirt bikes to a truck. I bought a ford ranger race truck from Las Vegas, I'm off to pick it up and take it to LA for import in 2 weeks. I have a couple of questions for yáll. I want to race the truck in class 5, does it need tail lights? It has fibre glass rear fenders but no lights. I know I need to replace the master cylinder with a dual circuit, dual master cylinder set up, who can tell me a good supplier and model type to buy, and do you guys use adjustable balance bars like some road racing cars do? Do you guys run boosted brakes ? What's a good value for money UHF and GPS unit? That's about it for now. Thanks, Chris Here tís: http://www.prerunnermaniac.com/index.php?option=com_adsmanager&page=show_ad&adid=68&catid=1&Itemid=111
Welcome to off-road, great looking truck! Pity you had to meet Gary and the Oztruck boys, they set a pretty bad example!!!! Guess it can only get better from here though!!! You will need to do a bit to the new truck, You dont need tailights, but you do need an amber dust light and a brake light, mounted up high. I would be surprised if it did'nt already have a dual circuit brake system, but you do need one, and a bias set-up would be good. Boosting is'nt necessarily required, just depends on your personal preference. GPS is not allowed. UHF is required, and you local (dick smith) radio store will sort you out. You will need a certain wattage, but cant remember what it is. I would suggest a handheld unit, and hook it into an intercom. Maybe contact philtronics (on the off road site) You will also need the truck engineered for the rollcage, again I'm not sure of current requirements, but plenty of others will know.
Thanks for the advice. Nice to know I don't need a GPS, there's $500 saved! The truck does have amber and red dust lights fitted. It doesn't have dual circuit brakes yet, the yanks don't need them to race. Can anyone else steer me in the right direction for the brake set up (suppliers?) and who in Newcastle or the Northern Territory might be able to engineer my cage? Thanks, Chris

Ahh, jones, thats not very nice mate.
bambam - Step 1 is download the log book application from the CAMS site. Then talk to cams to get the contact details of an inspector in your area who can do a pre race inspection for your log book. When we got ours done it cost $50 for the guy to come out and inspect the chassis.
If the chassis is made of approved materials and sizes its got to have the right barwork in it as per the diagrams in the CAMS manual, if not you'll either have to add them in or seek approval as a non-standard chassis. To be honest, if there are a few bars to add its probably easier than doing the paperwork!
Once the pre-approval is signed off its a matter of getting the log book finalised. Ours happeened pretty easy.
When does the car arrive?
KusterRaceco - if you can pick any holes in the above point them out for us.
