Restricted class

Is it time we had another look at a restricted buggy class? This time pehaps not look at it as a beginner class but one that caters for existing drivers. It would require some basic restrictions on engine, suspension, gearbox & why not a control tyre. There is no real reason why it couldn't have a specific engine either. Is there any interest?

TrophyLite is along the lines you are talking about but we have a control chassis and parts suppliers. I have had a lot of interest but as of yet no one has commited which is a pity as we will probally have to put the start off for another year and the prize money goes back to the states. I like what you are getting at though. I would like to see a single or two seater class with what ever 4 or 5 speed non sequential gearbox, SR 20 motor or simular, one coilover either end and one smoothbody shock no bypass or bumpstops, beam or a/arm, brakes free, maximum tyre size of 33", any computure or tune but the motor has to be sealed. I would like to see some more ideas thrown around for this and think you could run it in the prolite class but have your own prize money or trophies and compete at all levels.

I reckon you'll find heaps of people willing to give you your opinion, but no-one interested in running in a restricted class. This has already been recently tried. AORCom did a great job and put alot of effort into trying to resurect class 6, and to what end? It was a bust.

Can we bump prolite up to 4 litres so my lexus will have somewhere to play, wolf would be rather happy too. Only dreaming i know it will never happen, not that fussed really. Will be a couple of seasons before i am vaguely competitive. 4 litres would open up a whole new range of engines which would start a never ending spending spree. 4age20v engines are getting dear, i like the sound of the sr20 at around $500 damn cheap. Upsizing super 1650 to a 2litre class would cause huge dramas as its such a good class with close racing.

why not make it just a class for datsun powered cars.. 1300,1600 and 1800.. that might encourage all the cars that are sitting in sheds to come out and be competative in their own class... restricters ect only encourage people to try and cheat the system..as they cant be checked every race as time would not permit this...as stingray would know the Geelong club ran the "dinasour" class a few years ago and it seemed to work pretty good.....and was enjoyed by those that ran in the class...

Why not make the class Pre 95 (or whatever year) so anything with a log book and some sort of documented proof that it was built proir to that year it could run
i dont think these competitors would be phased about outright honors or sheep stations
just a good old fun group to run in then you would see the "old " original cars come out .

I would like to suggest the "Bongo Van" class.
I think the racing would be a real spectacle. Television channels would be lining up.
Of course, numbers in the class would probably be overwhelming to organisers, therefore I suggest that the class be broken up as follows:
Grey Primer Bongo
White Primer Bongo
Red Oxide Bongo
The red being the premier class as they are obviously faster.
We all should be scouring the local wreckers to get in on the ground floor of, What I'm sure, will be a booming sponorship opportunity for all.

Ive got a great idea.

Lets leave the goal posts where they are for a change, before any more would be competitors are scared away.

To follow on from what Carbyman wrote re a " pre 95" class.

At the last AORCom meeting a proposal forwarded through the Victorian state panel was presented with the intention of sounding out the other states re the interest in keeping Clubman class alive as a very general class for older vehicles no longer competetive in their original class.

Max 6 litre engine size (to cater for all classes) with a restrictor to provide parity between different engines ( and before everyone starts screaming, cars & motorcycles in events such as Dakar rally use such restrictors with great effect) A size of 30mm was suggested as a starting point, max manifold capacity of 4 times the engine displacement between the restrictor and head face.

Suspension, free but no external bypass or piggybacks shocks.

Max 4 forward gears.

Age to be not less than 5 years as per the log book.

I hope you get the general idea, the above was intended as a starting point for discussion with no doubt many prepared to comment (one way or the other).
Unfortunately AORCom decided that the previous decision to delete clubman class should stand.

A class with a limit on wheel travel, carby engines up to 2 litre, and torsion bar suspension, would cater for a lot of older cars, smaller budgets and would still be fun. If not at nationals, fair enough, but it could be something for the state panels to discuss.

How about beam cars over 15 years old only, under 3lt and production gearbox (ie: vw, reno or porcshe) can have good gear in it but no sequential that way it'll limit the power and speed of the older cars yet make for close racing
