Tyres for a super 1650

hmm Hi all,
This i guess is a loaded question with many answers.

What are the best tyres (all round) for a super 1650. obviously cost is a factor as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your tyre choose is a loaded question, as it involves many factors. Some things to consider would be your gear ratio and motor size- as that will effect the size of the tyre. I was told it was a good idea to get as large a diametre tyre as possible so this will help the vehicle rolling over gutters and hole. I recently tried 15" rally tyre on a smoother and tight course and for that purpose they work well, giving me a great deal of traction. But for the longer rougher courses I run Mickey Thompsons which I am happy with.

I guess I'm looking for an all round tyre. Obviously M/T's are good but I need more detail. Which ones? A/t, M/t, Baja?
I have heard alot of talk that worn tyres will save the gearbox. I'm running a un5 with albins close ratio gears.

Is there a cheaper brand that is as good?

Howdy Dave,

We ran Bridgestone Dueler MT 31x10.5 and they were brilliant tyres. We had the UN5 with the Mivec engine and they performed really good and we never really had a gearbox drama to speak of. In my opinion (and its only my opinion) I wouldn't run more than a 31" tyre for a super 1650. I tried 33" tyres when we had our really good engine and it only just pulled them, but I gave the clutch a big workout getting it back in the engines power band. The 31" were a great size for the super 1650 ratios.

Cheers
Luke

Yeh not bad Dave,
We are planning to do the 5 AORC rounds this year (if work times and budget allows). Fair few changes to the car after the first year, so hopefully we can improve on our 2009 results. I'll be trying and of course having fun which are the main things. Looking forward to seeing your 1650... photos on buildup soon???
Cheers

luke did you the 33 x 12.5
or the 33 x 10.5 tyres ?

i sore your old un5 striped down ,
and apart from some
broken syncro's and a redesigned shifter
the box was in good order ,

but the ratios where to low for the wa races ,
and the engine was on the limiter down most of the straights
having ridden in it i would have ran the 33 x 10.5 bfg's
but thats my opinion and its only on that car ,

G'day mate,

For the SA races, the 31x10.5 were ideal. On the majority of the tracks, the car just popped the limiter before the end of the straights. It was great. I understand the racing over there is a lot more open, so over there a larger tyre may be needed, but over here we have quite a few tight and windy tracks where the smaller tyres/ratios were fantastic.
Are you racing hyden?
Cheers

I am going to have a look at it over the weekend.
Can tell you that it is a thornbuilt wasp frame and is comming together nicely. not sure if it will get together for the first race but hopefully I will get it there. Might need to have a (no beer) working bee and invite everybody to get it done!

yeah we noticed the sa races are more technical than the wa tracks ,
and figured thats why you had lower ratios in the box ,

im hoping to get my old rivy ready for hyden also ,
