Cable Ties....DOs & DON"Ts

Just thought I would start a thread on the acceptable uses of a cable tie, where and when they can and can't be used, just to clear up any confusion.

This would be very useful to me, as apart from the wheel nuts, my car is practically held together with them.

is race tape /100mph tape a bad thing too or is that better than cable ties
maybe if u put race tape over the cable tie its all ok
id say theres more unproffesionalism (big word aye) in this sport than some bloke having a go /keeping the car running
GO IAN GO YOU GOOD THING

We eventually got going again at finke using the spare steering arm and cable ties covered with 100m/hr tape to fix a snapped top a-arm. If the sweep vehicle hadnt come through we would have kept trying! We eventually drove 10k back twards alice on the support road with it.

Don't all the best motels supply fluffy cable ties in their bedside tables?

Actually, I had to laugh recently when the news media sensationalized a story of a young bloke in a Nissan turbo (Skyline maybe) was caught speeding & was subsquently defected because his car had many parts held on with cable ties & race tape. What made me laugh was that after 33 years as a mechanic, the cable ties & tape would actually be a far more secure way of holding on trim & panels than the clips found on most modern cars today, I'm sure all would agree. The interesting thing is that it's quite legal as long as it doesn't hinder important access points.

Cable tie racers can join an elite group including John Goss who won Bathurst in 1985 with his drivers racing seat cable tied to the B pillar after the seat mounts broke and just this weekend gone Bathurst winner Greg Murphy started race 4 in Bahrain from pit lane with cable ties holding an extra accelerator pedal return spring in place after a sticking pedal was found during qualifying and the highly qualified and experienced race engineers couldn't fix the problem in time.
