just want to find out exactly what is required at a national round regarding extinguishers.i have gone through the cams manual and as far ive read.
no expiry date on them
no tags needed
years ago the rule was 1x extinguisher,tagged and regular service.Thats until i got to a griffith national round in 03 and the scrutineer picked on the stamped date being older than 2 years.well this caused a stampede at the local Kmart for many competiors that night.This year im looking at going to a few nationals again and would really like to know where i stand in this.my currrent ext where bought july 09 but unfortunately stamped 08 .does this mean they are expired or not.
im bringing up this topic again ,as i was at hyden last weekend pit crewing for team LIABILLITY . i spent most of friday watching at scrutineering and the same issue raised its head again *** fire extingushers ****at least 20+ cars were found to have out of date extingushers.i have gone through the cams manual again checked OFF ROAD section and it says go to shedule H in general requirements for cars and drivers.went there and its says nothing of a life span for a date on the bottle.u here different regs from scrutineers,drivers and cams manual. QUESTION 1 where does it say in the cams manual that there is a life span on the bottle Q2 is it 2 or 3 years Q3 my current bottles are dated 2/2/2008 (so far going by cams manual these are fine just need checking for pressure prior 2 race)
im not fussed if there is a 2 or 3 year rule ,i would just like this rule to be clear ,so i present the car at future events in up to date form
i must say the scrutineering at hyden was tough but least they were't bias (big guns copped it as well)
Glenn, cannot help with trying to decipher the cams manual, but I normally replace mine every 2 years according to date stamped on bottle. Tagging is not necessary (even though I did that for 10yrs when not required). Pressure vessel check is more expensive than buying new extinguishers!
When i looked into this last year when building my buggy ,i couldnt find nothing in the cams manual support these so call 2-3 year rule.so i just went and bought new ones,problem is they werent new and they were already stamped 09,so i'm with the rest of you?whats the go?..
AFAIK have to be checked every year and tag date punched. At Finke scrutineering they have a guy from Chub who are event sponsors who will do the check. Main part of the check is to loosen powder by hitting the extinguisher with a rubber mallet.

yeh thx for your replies but it seems im going with 2 years from date on the bottle. just bought 2 new chubbs dated 3/9/2010 so at least i get another 17 months out of them. does anyone know if i go to a specific fire ext place would i get bottles dated close to purchase date.
The ruling in the NCR's does not mention date of manufacure of date of expiry. The direction to scrutineers at this stage is to check that the fire extinguisher is the correct size, is in the green and shake it to ensure that the contents have not settled. Have raised the issue of scrutineers interpreting the rules differently, with the NSW Scrutineering Panel and they will take this up at the next confernece of State Scrutineering Panels.

DOES that mean that we have been throwing away fire extinguishers regularly for NO reason, or have the rules recently changed again.
Years ago I was told to tag/inpect them yearly, then I was informed to pressure test the vessel 2 yearly and tag also, then I was told tagging was not necessary if the bottle was not more than 2 years old from the stamped date on the bottle. I was also told a tagged bottle cannot be passed if the pressure vessel was more than 2 years old.
I just gave away 2 brand new extinguishers in the box because they were going to be too old for my next race and I had not fitted them yet!
Maybe I should turn on my newly fitted fuel inspection tap (that might not be required now), light up the buggy, and forget about CAMS/off road racing?????
