Portland mass start

Just read with interest the sup regs on the Portland sand enduro and noticed they have a mass start. (all at once). How do they get this past Cams.

I would have thought that a mass start would mean that the event would be classified as a speed event. Offroad racing is classified as endurance racing wether it be short or long coarse and as such is in essance a time trial.

It opens up some options in running short course events in a stadium race format with out a license upgrade. A precedense has been set has it not.

just a disscussion point, no more no lesssmile

you just need a wide enough start line to fit them in. do know of somewhere else you could do that?

Not a new thing for Portland, I remember there been one in about 86-87. Lots of fun, I think they can do it because of the wide track.

The Mass start will be in classes so you will usually have a group of about 10 starting at once, they are a lot of fun and also good because you know your position in the race immediately..
Anyone thinking about doing this race won't be dissapointed, there is a myth that sand is hard on your cars but there are plenty of other races that are harder ,plus if a 15 year old novice can drive a valiant around and finish most other vehicles won't have a problem

how wide is wide enough but. would you say 80 feet for 4 cars would be ok?. Loaded question, more news to come

the valiant did this for about 8 laps and had no problems,
as for the width we usually start with about a 3 foot gap between each car
it is a pretty awesome way to start a race !

hi guys i help run the st helens sand enduro down here in little old tassie. we have run class mass starts for a long time, they usually are rolling starts with 30 seconds between class's rotating each heat. this is really efective and helps eliminate cars getting bogged in the sand on the start line.

due you guys apply to cams or your state offroad panel when submitting event regs appling for a mass start your is it just the organising committes decision.
I really like the idea but am not sure who's approval you need to run an event that way.

Having a track wide enough is only part of the solution to having multi car starts. Portland is also one of the few off road events with no dust all year round.
