CV grease - what to use?????????

Hi All,

New to the sport and in the process of preping for finke.

Currently running 934 cv's and wondering what people are using with regards to cv grease.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

Swepco and Belray mix is what is commonly used in the states.

However I've had great sucess with Caterpilla Dezert Formula Gold, never had a CV fail, it's never overheated, never moved from it's intended location.

Hi Chris,

give Cam at Racer Imports a call and he'll get you on the right track. He just supplied me with the Belray and Swepco grease to mix (like Redmist recommended)

I should have also noted that I have used the swepco / belray mix and other than the fact that it makes a messy process considerably more so, the mix has also worked for me without failure..... I'll still stick to the Cat product as I've never had a CV fail with it, it's cleaner , it's cheaper and it's also used in the states (without failure).

Whatever you do, DO NOT, go anywhere near the common automotive CV greases. They simply degrade with heat. I've removed a boot once (many years ago in a 1650 car) and had the grease flow out of the CV like water.

Thanks for the replies everyone - seems like mixing grease is the way to go.

Read that's what they were doing over in the states - high tech stuff right there ahahahaha.

Will give Cam a call later in the day to get it sorted.

Now ...... back to my checklist grrrrrrr

Grease is designed for a certain purpose. Different weights, different components. I use a GP grease for bushings/rack, Timken grease for all bearings, Cat grease for CV's.

I think CV grease is too sticky for both general and bearing use. You'll find it'll attract dirt/grit and wear the bushings faster. I think bearing grease is too light for bushing use but I've used it on bushings when stuck.

well i went with the timken hi temp wheel bearing grease gr224 it is a red grease. i will run that in wheel bearings and the proma in cv's then a cat multipurpose 5moly grease in the rack and bushes on front beam. sorted.

so much for one grease to do the lot. but your right redmist. each application has its own grease
