Ive destroyed my first 1600 vw box , will a 1800 or 2lt box fit straight in without modifying any adapter plates etc or will it require a different settup?
also are the cv positions similar on all three?
Might be a stupid question, help a newbie out ive got no idea?
2 litre case and input shaft are about 10mm longer and you would need to have new gears cut as well if you change to a different box as the diff ratio's are different and 2 litre gear sets are different than 1800-1600. what broke in the vw box?
i blew my 1600 diff, all the hollinger gears went straight into the 1800 case and bolted straight in,the 2lt is slightly longer ,so a little work to fit,the outputs are in the same spot
lamby, Im not sure what broke in the gear box yet i havnt pulled it out yet, its makin some horrible crunching noises and there is some gear pieces floating around in the casing
I figure I will replace the whole thing and look at the existing as rebuild or spare parts, (while i teach myself how to do it).
If you are going to build a new one it will cost some $$$ I would reccomend at least going to 1800 box ( bit stronger case than 1600) and installing an Albins super diff and putting a strengthening plate in between the bell housing and case, you won't be able to run stock gears (1st and 2nd are not too bad) but you will at least need third and fourth gears cut to make it driveable. You have probably broken a gear or the diff carrier in your current box, I would start by checking what is damaged there as it could be an easier fix than you think.
I have heaps of standard 1600 cheap if you want and I have a stock reco 1800 never used and I think I might have some 2lt and 1800 cases my number 0418 288 076
