Why has the lower limit engine capacity for our class been dropped from 1330cc to 0 cc ????? Do Cams have some hidden agenda ???? are they getting rid of class 3 ???? . Cheers Scooter
I dont remember that coming up at any club meetings . Pity as class 3 is still fairly inexpensive and a good class to start in , just another example of cams looking after our sport I suppose .
As Sportsman is no longer recognised as a National Championship class, the removal of the lower limit allows Sportsman vehicles to legally contest the AORC in Super 1650.
Class 2&3 should be allowed to be single seater cars, this might bring some competitors back to State and National levels of racing, it's getting harder for people to get the time away from work to travel to some events it's hard to find a navy to also have the time off, this could be the problem with Griffith the majority of racers in NSW come from north of Sydney.
How many late model cars are running 1650 because the 2L engines seem to be all a minimum of 10 years old and hard to find. The SR20 stopped production in 2003. The 4AGE stopped production other than China in 2002. I haven't researched the availability of other manufacturers or engine sizes because these two are by far the most common. I like Jeremy's thoughts, but I guess I am biased because I run a 2L. Maybe a Kombi box class and whatever engine-buggy configuration because it would limit the horse power, but Kombi boxes are hard to find as well.
SuperLites 1800 to 2500, and Super 1800. most current performance 1650 used currently produce as much power as current 1800's in production cars (Corolla, Mazda3, Tiida, Getz & i20 @ around 100kw) Superlites allow the import of US ecotec's as a going car plus a older SR20 will produce as much power as a Factory 2.5 (Camry 2.5, Mazda6 etc. maybe not IS250 or Maxima 2.5) Remember the sportsmans are still a class at club and state level.
why not just leave it alone, I'm sure 90% of the people currently racing in these classes don't want to change, and the people building cars don't want it to change. I understand the accommodating of sportsman in super 1650 for nationals, but there are still plenty of 1300 to run there own class in state. With stability, surely you would have more competitors than changing things all the time.
Im with VP leave 1650 alone , it is buy far the most popular class at state level with strong fields at most races. As for the avaiblity of engines honda and nissan still produce 1.6 ltr engines and mazda's and toyota's are a dime a dozen at wrecking yards ( and diahatsu's sorry Adam ) class 2 works dont try and fix it .
Personally, I like the idea of running class 3 and class 2 together and adding a class to go inbetween 1650 and prolite. Currently there is too much gap meaning that it is almost getting dangerous how quickly the big cars close in on the smaller cars. If we ran a 2.5lt non turbo 4cylinder class that would allow people to run ecotec's and the like (cheap but with a little more grunt) without the need for the big gearbox. I think you will end up with far more people running as most don't want to come in an hour behind the big boy's on a 350km race and as for the budget concious it will be far cheaper.
only thing, that i can see that needs to change , having only recently coming into the sport is the single seat rule. all classes should be able to run single seat...
same thing it is hard to get a mate to take time off work as well as your self.
more confusion is the last thing we need. Most people are only just coming to grips with the last changes that were going to make it easier for non racers & spectators to understand the Classes we run. Dunno when that was, but I still have no concept of the names that they gave the different classes. But I do notice that if you tell somebody a motor size its no worry explaining it. I have on odd occaisions given a hand to comentate at races and if I didn't have the piece of paper in front of me with the classes written there, I would have no clue ( normal for me). Entering results and stuff & reports on races also needs the paperwork next to me to sort out the names of classes. the only people who know the name of the class is the people that run in it. As I said, I don't need any more added confusion, I confused enough.
In terms of the single seater rule. It often looks greener on the other side. However. NZ already has no restrictions in terms of seating. It's proven to make any limited cc two seater drastically uncompeditive. I would prefer to see NZ introduce a CAMS style two seater class. This would increase the number of compeditors and introduce more people to NZ offroad racing.
