There is a number of small buggies - like Sidewinders, etc - that all race around Australia - there was 16 at a event called "Superior Engineering Short Course" held a few weekends ago in Queensland - there is obviously a big following in Western Australia - www.wasuperlites.com/
The times for these vehicles at the "short course" event was very close to the UTV's that were racing there as well....
Is it possible they are going to open up Class 6 to include these style of home built/custom built single seat racers?
No they aren't. They are a Class of their own. There is regs for them already.
TORQ in Victoria has its own track and runs every month there. Qld had a Club for a little while but it folded and in Sydney we put a day on to get a feel for how many might be out there and if they might be able to form a Club to race on the COLO PARK circuit. We had about 35 Mini Buggies of all shapes and sizes, turn up for this and enough interest was shown to form a Committee & start things happening. Some of the guys that showed up had polaris's and are now racing in that class. We still have one or two Mini Buggies that come up to our Club races for a run between normal races. But interest from the majority wained and after a couple of years of perserverance, the Committee gave up the fight. Not enough commitment from the guys with these machines, even though there was rules already in CAMS for them to run to. Some of the Buggies needed to modify the safety cage to suit and this was too hard for most who had bought or built custom vehicles, with no thought to racing beforehand. Most of them had purchased or built their buggies to play with on weekends and hadn't realised the backyard would get to small after a while. It is a shame, cause some of these machines really get going. Carl Conran, one of the guys in SORRA that runs an edge buggy regularly runs at our events but not in the races. He comes up to give a hand at our meetings and has even taken his Buggy down to the Victorian track at Kynton to play with them.
Now thats a lot of explanation about nothing. Hope that helps
I saw the mini buggies at Bendigo last year after our race (approx 20) and it is a dedicated class in Vic.
They were very quick, but no jumps and on a motorkana track.
After talking with a few of the owners they are mostly kit kart stuff with safety mods and all had motor bike engines and gearboxes.
Price for these ones was from $9k to approx $25k.
Nothing to do with Off Road Racing, but looked fun.
Like fairwaylites or steroid bumper cars.
Digsy the motorbike powered buggies like the WA Superlites can currenttly run in CAMS in the buggy classes if built to the correct spec. I wouldnt put them into the UTV class based on that in WA the 'Superlites' that have raced have been far quicker than the UTV's that have raced. At one of the races earlier this year 2 of the top 5 after prologue were motorbike powered buggies beating several pro buggies. Off the top of my head there are currently about 5 CAMS logbooked superlites in WA, all running the prolite class due to being single seaters and all running motorbike engines. They are very quick, having outrighted several prologues. Phil Shepley has his up for sale at the moment and its an absolute bullet and starting to get some pretty good reliability going now after finishing Kalgoorlie earlier this year which was one of the tougher events we have seen in a while
Does anyone feel that if they were called "superlites". People unaware or new to our sport might think they are similar to "prolite" class?
Also if someone interested started "googling" then they could get confused with the stadium style USA classes?
I actually think "UTV" class name is quite satisfactory and requires no explanation?
