I am in the process of building a class 9 with a motorcycle engine. You do need a reverse, also the car has to be built out of quite heavy (by motorcycle standards) materials. The motor is a bit of an issue too, realistically you want and or need a 1300CC sports bike, which means it the GSXR1300, and you are looking at about 5k for an engine package. Then there is a gearbox shaft issue which needs remedeying. Also to gear it low enough, you need a 65-70 tooth rear sprocket which eats into ground clearance etc etc. It can be done, and sooner or later I will get mine on the track, but its a hard way to do it. There is one competitive class 9 with a bike motor (927 I think in alice, and a non competitive class three well unreliable at least here in SA).
I am currently building a class 9 with a Kawasaki ZX9 engine. I think this is plenty quick enough and was under the 3k mark. the car i am building is going to weigh approximatly 350 - 400kg when done, so the power to weight ratio is still going to be great.
I am using a 60 tooth rear sprocket which makes it (mathimatically) geared to about 220km/hr. Which it no doubt wont reach.
For reverse i am using a Camry starter motor to spin a flywheel connected to the rear axel. Works quite well.
King sandcars from the USA makes a rear axle for a motor bike engine car that has reverse in it have a look at thier site they sell the set up. good luck.
i am gona use it as an entry level into this form of racing, gona run class 3 and run a fuel injected zx12r i reckon it should run competetive at club level especially round the tighter shorter tracks (as wolf said). the finke??? that is a dream, and will take me some time to get a car that i would feel comfortable handling that race, hopefully one day.
Luke are you the same Boyd that posts on the TORC site? If so based on you location if you want to run a buggy powered by a bike engine then your better off racing with them, It's a long drive to Colo from Yarra valley. If not then start to get all your parts together and wait for the new TORC manual to come out. If you go back and read the post Can'o'worms you'll see that when the rules come out I'm going to put a proposal to the nice people at SORRA to trial racing mini-buggies at their track Just keep checking the TORC site and here and when I know more I'll post the info BSG
yeah bsg, i am also on the torc forum, building a open class to race there, waiting for cams decisions to be made so i can comply with new regulations. got a mate who helped me with my open class and he was interested in building one to race aswell, he had a zx12r motor through a mate and a after a few beers we decided we would have a crack at the class 3 state championship next year. i am from the yarra valley (victoria), but found this forum and thought it would be a good place to hang out and ask some questions and learn some more. i have learnt a lot reading other threads etc. very interested to see how the you go with the idea of running a club at the SORRA track, i know myself for one would be very interested in an interstate trip for some racing and am sure more people from the club would share my opion.
just out of interested my buggy looks like it will be:
A frame front, trailing rear, abround 18" travel each corner, wheelbase is 2215mm (87"), track is 1960mm(77"), just still going through CAMS manual to work out all the rules and regs have to abide by...
87 x 77 would make a good footprint for a class 3 with a bike motor. Nice and light - great for colo! but what about torc track? would it be on the big side??? (dont know as Ive never been there!)
