It is my very sad duty to inform SORRA that another of our members has passed away.
John Nemes was in the UK with his wife Rosemary visiting their daughter & former member Amy after attending their son Bens wedding, (another former member) in Hungary, where he passed away suddenly.
John epitomised the club racer in many ways. He competed at many club races but also Tri-series, State & occasionally the Griffith 500. Although he raced at Griffith 3 or 4 times, a finish was outside his grasp. At State level his best was 3rd in Class 1 in 1997 but over the years he race he placed in the top 5 in NSW Class 1 3 times. His best result in the Tri-series was his last year in 2002 & that was again 3rd in Class 1. John raced in the SORRA Club Championship over a number of years with his best result, you guessed it, 3rd in Class 1 in 2002. John was by no means a small bloke and his first car, the ex Alan Taylor car from Mudgee proved good for a few years but was later replaced with probably the last buggy frame built by Bob Stansfield & powered by a 4AGZE Toyota. John never had any misplaced ideas that he was an older version of Mark Burrows as a driver or vehicle preparer. He raced because it was his way of destressing and simply because it was fun. The other thing was John didnt know a screwdriver from a spanner and so relied on those who knew to fix his problems, but help was there from many including Dick Allport, Jeff Cripps and many others.
Many of us enjoyed his company and he will be missed. Our deepest condolances to Rosemary his wife, Ben and Amy his children and to his extended family from all of us at SORRA and the rest of the Off Road Racing community in NSW.
