i'm surprised that the nissan rb30 has'nt been mentioned as a prolite engine option,it may be only three litres but is quite powerful ,very reliable and is easy to obtain performance parts.the only problem i see with it is that it could be a bit long for most buggies.
I think if you could get one, and afford one, one of the engines as used in the new Toyota Aurion would be an excellent choice. 3.5 litres, 200Kw standard with all of the pollution stuff on it, etc would mean that you would easily gain some more when it was all removed.
The only problem with these engines would be finding one and also paying for it.
Someone told me they got quoted 16k for an Aurion crate motor.
Jones loves his 3.3 subi engine. good torque, light, low centre of grav. Worth a look I reckon. There are a few B32 hondas getting around. Revvy engines that sound great. There's also the various camry engines for the budget concious. Those things are like rocks, they're everywhere.
RB30 is a cast block isnt it? I thought they were pretty heavy?
*edit* Oh and with the mitsu engine, try www.wikipedia.org and see if you can find its stats. If no joy there try www.ask.com to search forums.

C32A or C35A Honda V6.3.2 or 3.5 litre V6. Excellent choice for prolite as they are close/on the capacity limit. Can also be turbocharged and run in Pro class.

Shorter stroke 84mm vs 91mm and no balance shaft.Cylinder head is a slightly better design.
Also generally cheaper but slightly older. C32A production ran from 91-95 in the Legend and for a few more years in the TL. C35A production 96-04 in the RL.Both of the engines were used in australian delivered cars so there is full parts support from Honda.
Tony Felhaber ran 8th outright to Finke with the 3.5 then suffered a gearbox failure crossing the line an was a DNS for the return leg. Yakko Kylma ran 10th outright. These engines are straight from the importers.
Yes Wolf, I do love my scoobie engine so far...but it is not light, it weighs 168kg race ready, opposed to 182kg for the lexus 1UZ. And it's a big engine to fit to most cars! Also the reason I chose this engine was the max torque at 4800rpm and hp at 6000rpm, (although I now use 7400rpm limit) which would suit my 3 speed auto transaxle. The honda would be great for a light buggy with a manual close ratio box. Max hp 7200rpm! I have been told the bottom ends are weak...buzzard may elaborate! I like the idea of the VQ30, where do you get them? I thought they were mostly turbos? Bob Strawbridge & other southerners seem to like the mitsu's...I cant see any reason why not, except the cast iron blocks. (they go great in road cars)
I'd suggest EMS 8860, or even the stinger if you're not fussed about sequential firing and want to save a few bucks. 8860 is around 1500ish and they've put plenty of them into offroad cars.
Good service too, really helpfull guys. http://www.enginemanagementsystem.com/
Talk to Crofty - he's an ecu guru though he's mainly motec. He'll steer you the right way.
We're running EMS and I think Azteck is too. 432 used to and I think Jones did as well before they both spent some extra pennies and went motec.
*edit* fyi, just did a quick ebay search. New stinger for 1030, 8860 for 1495. includes software and loom. might be worth a look at?
