I'm 36 years old and I come from the Motocross racing background / welder and live in the states (Texas). Im am now very interested in the Offroad/Desert Car racing scene, and am curious as to where I can find more info on building your own frame / Chassis / car?
I have looked everywhere on the internet and this site (http://offroadracing.com.au/sorra/build_Wolf.htm) is the only one that ive come across of exactly what im looking for... but its Australian. I've been informing myself of the US classes (Score and TIBD) so I know what I want.
My only problem is that I CANNOT find ANYTHING on how to even get started in this scene. I dont want to buy, i want to build.
Make a plan and stick to it! we changed heaps of stuff during the build process and it added much more time to the build process than anticipated. once youve got a plan in mind dont change it! you can always mod it after its on track.
Try to get as many items purchased before the build process starts as possible. We had to buy parts as we went (budgetary restrictions! no deficit spending!) and it caused a few headaches - better to have everything (or as many parts as possible) ready to go.
Although it adds heaps of time we found it invaluable to make dummy arms from scrap after we designed them and used them to make jigs and the jigs to make the final product. Saved us some headaches in the long run as we could see where the original designs could be improved on once they were on the car.
At least youve got a decent welder - that'll help!
We looked at heaps of cars and pics before deciding what to do with our car - didnt help becuase we changed heaps of stuff during the build process! But did give us lots of ideas. Ive got a folder in the shed loaded with pictures.
Not sure what technical issues you might be interested in, ask any questions and Im willing to help were I can!
