Beam front sticktion - she's TIGHT

Hi,

Offroad virgin here trying to give some love to my first buggy.

I have replaced the beam bearings and bushes and replaced with 1 piece urethane bush.

The arms are now very stiff. The wheels hang up when the front is lifted off the ground. It slowly goes down after several seconds

The suspension jacks down a bit when downward pressure is applied (me jumping on beam). When I get off the ride height stays where it stopped.

Arms were well lubed before installation and smooth, no rust etc.

All this has been done static in shed.

Is this "normal" with new urethane bushes?

Will they bed in with use and free up?

First testing this weekend.....would like to know whats going on or any pointers before hand in case ive made a BOO BOO!!

How tight were the bushes in the beam? Did you have to bash them in? If you had to bash them in the inside diameter of the bush may have been reduced a little making the arms tight in the bush..... And i`m assuming the arms didn`t slide in easily either......

The only time ours went htat tight was when we (and by we I mean I!) bent the beam.

I know of one guy who reamed out the inside diameter of the bush by grinding cutting edges onto the leading edge of an old arm then would wind it in - but you'd want to be very carefull doing this or youll end out with slop on the arm and that would only get progressivly worse till you broke something...

I'd wait for other suggestiions and do this as a last resort!

If you can push down on the car then they are loose enough and will bed in. A beam car has a lot of built in resistance to movement so what seems stiff in the shed is normally okay on the track.

Arms were a firm fit on installation but slid in by hand pressure only.

Bushes were a bit harder to seat home for the last inch or so.

New link pins are probably contributing as well. (the old, flogged ones were rattly in their bushes)

I'll see how she goes after the weekend. Nothing seems to be binding and I wont be going at race pace till brakes are bedded in etc.

Cheers for the advice

Thanks again,

The arms did free up quite a bit and now move as as expected on the track.

Unfortunately i broke the steering box mounts in the process......back in the shed I go.

Plate which holds steering box broke which then flogged the top mounts (old HR steering box).

I could be accused of driving a little bit too hard over the rough stuff. This old horse is not so keen on a rough course.

Red mist, new toy, combined with a bad design to start with...not a good mix. New mounting plate, proper bracing and a mig will fix no probs.

Could explain why the steering was a bit vague on the last lap???

haha - a bit vague! I'll bet it was! Lots of steering brake use?

We saw phil page at dondingalong finish a race with no front wheels at all. He did half a lap, turned it into the pits, drove it the full length of the pit area and turned it right into his pit bay.... all with a standing ovation obviously.

I reckon this would have to be the vaguest steering possible?
