I believe there is a difference, there are two types you can get. I got the metal type (more costly about $150). I got my last headgasket at Castlehill Toyota http://www.chtoyota.com.au/ Also Penrith Toyota has them http://www.penrithtoyota.com.au/toyota-parts.html Cheers, John
cherrs guys , do you know if the black top head will fit the silver top block , i know the silver runs a little less comp , and they seem to have differant timing belts too but i would assume it should fit ?

The blacktop head definitely fits, as the blocks are the same. The differences are in the pistons, and as you mentioned the timeing belts. There is a Toyota forum called Toymods where they have heaps of people who have done all sorts of conversions and alterations, etc to their engines, it would be well worth a look. You would definitely be able to find out on there exactly what you need to do to make it all run without any problems. From what I have read in the past, it is a pretty simple conversion I think.
The blocks on all the 4AGE's are so close to the same that I think all heads will fit all models. The differences ar down the bottom with sump shapes and blockouts for differing engine mounting configurations.
I don't see any issues with fitting black heads on a silver block.
Not sure on the timing belt but I know my silver top used to run the timing belt specified for a Lada Samara as it was the same size and teeth.

Yep, they have more lift, and I believe that the duration of the cams is slightly different as well. They are also lighter then the silvertop cams (due to the narrower area on the back of the lobe). There is, of course, the obvious difference of the larger throttle bodies
With regards to the timing belt, I think the diffference was due to the different belt tensioner used. The blacktop tensioner is different to the silvertop. Another thing to check would be the number of teeth/diameter on the cam pulleys, in case they are different.
did check that one , found they have the same number of teeth , dia , tooth pofile , but they are 1 mm wider , i ended up using the silver sprokets though , same the thottle bodys dont fit , but they'll be put to use soon !
