i've heard a rumour on the grape vine that  class two might be changing from 1600cc to 2 litre, just wondering if any truth to it? Hope so

No it wont, it will be good for class 2. At the moment the gap between class 1 and class 2 is to far apart, i think it would be good to bring the two classes closer together.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to go harder. Or is that wanting to go faster. mmm harder and faster, that sudden stop at the end is going to have a lot more bang to it.

I just think it will give class two more of a range of motors to pick from, plus close the gap a little to class one with a bit more gap between 2 & 3.   It'll also give class two a little more power and speed without all the cost envolved with trying to compete in class 1 at the Australian level.   I would like to get a bit bigger engine, but i  know i can't afford to compete against the likes of Burrows and Rentsch, not all of us can.  It wouldn't make our class that much more to compete in either

Trouble is you blow out a not to expensive class you would need a bigger transmission for one more $$$$


why not do a 1/2 1650 class or a class 10 (us) with a minimum weight of approx 600/700 kg or so there is other ways u know maybe get rid of class 9 make class 1 an optional 1 or 2 seats

My personal view is definately do it.  I have reasons as to why I think its a good thing (and no doubt everyone will hash them out), but at the end of the day, I just wanna go faster!

 why change just class 2  lets change the whole class structure , that way we even out the diffrents between the haves and the not so haves.

Whilst any change to increase Class 2 to 2lt should be primarily sorted out between Class 1 & 2 competitors (remember an increase to 2lt would also cut into Class 1 competitors) the Class 2 competitors should bear in mind that generally the most favourable thing about the current Class 2 (1650cc) is that you have a wide selection of engines that put out good horsepower whilst remaining reliable & competitive but dont generally break gearboxes. An increase to 2lt with the resultant increase in horsepower would increase the chances of gearbox breakage therefore more exotic & expensive gearboxes may need to be bought to keep the reliability. Another thing to remember is that a change to 2lt would neccessitate building a new engine just to remain competitive. All this just adds up to spending more money and for what gain? If you are in Class 2 & want to go faster - go Class 1. Think before making a decision. Is it the best for the sport?

Maybe the class ones with 2lt motors would like it, as for having to go to a better gearbox, most class 2's have modified ones already,and a standard one should take it. I know i ran a standard 1600 beetle one behind a 1800cc turbo for three years and it was only the tree pushing the drive sharft thru it that broke it    As for going to class one, it's to bigger jump, i don't have a spare $100,000 to be competative at an Australian level

Sorry Dusteater, don't have a spare $150,000+ to run class 1. As for the engine size for class 2 there are a lot of A Arm cars being built, with this there is added weight so i think the change in engine size is only fare. As for another thing i think most of the class 2 people that run Nationals are running 5 speed boxes any way. That's just my opinion.

You are spot-on Dusteater. Everything you say makes perfect sense, if some Class 2 competitors want to go faster then their option is move to Class 1. Just because a small group of some current Class 2s want to go that way, don't spoil it for the majority. Think about the implications for the sport as a whole!!!

Just further for everyone's information, the subject of a possible change to Engine size for Class 2 is an agenda item at the next Australian Off Road Commission meeting in Melbourne next weekend. But don't all go getting on your high horses, it is just an item for discussion and i can gaurentee no decision will be made. Any potential major change to a class structure must involve a long period of discussion and feedback from competitors Australia wide and from all levels, i.e. club, state and national. But anyone who feels they have something to say and contribute to this issue should take the time to contribute their thoughts to forums like this. so those on AORCom who make the decisions can be more informed.

Hi, all time for some sanity. Let's get this clear from the start, engine capacity has little to do with going faster. I have just read the Heyden results, Chris Coulthard 4th outright section one 1st section two, 1st section three, with a 1650cc engine. Our sport is about a package, motor, gearbox & suspension, all of these combined is what makes an off road car go fast. I put this question to you all, which of the two following cars would have the fastest lap time in an AORC event. A car with a 100hp engine, with a six speed gearbox & 24 inches of wheel travel on all four wheels or a car with 300hp engine a four speed gearbox & eleven inches travel? We all know the answer. The concept of sorting out classes by engine capacity is old hat, there are far more efective ways of making classes different. I believe Chrise's results in WA make this very clear. Finaly those who are saying that they can't afford a class one explain how a class 2 car with a larger engine would be any less expensive. If we want to make class 2 different to class one we must have restrictions other than engine capacity. Cheers.

Is it a full class chnge debate? not just class 2?


Some good points, with Chris's results to back them up.


Are we heading back to the Class division of Pro/Pro Lite/Pro Lite Lite (?)/Challenger debate?


Is class division by engine size getting less and less relevant as suspension and gearbox technology more detirmines the overall result? I understand that when this system was put in place a majority of chassis/gearbox combinations were similar across the buggy classes and engine was much more relevant in detirmining outright position (please correct me if Im wrong... I was 7 at the time!)


The pro class debate has been coming up and down for a while now... the challenger class debate was a catalyst for camp fire discussions, no doubt the class 2 engine change debate will kick off another round.


But back to stingray's comments, a lightweight, strongly engined and well driven class 2 car has potential to give the big boys a run (though with Shannon and Mark out...)


Stingray's comments certainly seem pretty thought provoking considering the results on the weekend...
