Something that has concerned me for a while is the way we do our fuel stops. I am not talking about refueling during a service break. With the prospect of a flag to flag race in the wind I think this should be dicussed. The amount of fuel that some of the big guys carry is quite frankly, frightning. Years ago there were restrictions on capacity but these seem to no longer exist. What I would like to see in all long distance events is cold fuel stops. They did it at Mildura in the past. If you needed to stop for fuel you had to take ten minutes. This meant you could let your engine run down, get out of the car in a casual manner, take your time whilst refueling, get back in & tighten your belts properly. After ten minutes had elapsed you were flaged back into the race. The ten minutes was deducted from your lap time. You were also able to take a comfort break, clean your visor & have a drink. It was also OK to inspect your car for problems but you could not touch it.
Not really, people are going to stop for fuel. All this would do is make it a much safer process. Let's be honest, pouring fuel from jerry cans is not ideal. If there is a refuel accident, we may be forced into a more hi tech & expensive system, which I would argue for most competitors is not what we want. A cold stop system would also mean that there would be no need to fill some of the 200 plus lire tanks that some guys are using, again making things safer.
I'd prefer to see the fuel stop/s being an enforced 10 minute cold stop but with only 5 minutes deducted from your time. This would then encourage a bit more fuel efficiency in tactics for how the race is handled.
