building my buggy to specs

hey guys,
just wondering if anyone can shed some light on my situation.

i got a buggy off the guy over the back fence for nothin and been doing her up slowly for the past 2 years. im not too sure what it is but supposadly it was raced back in its hay day. volkwagen 1600 engine with stock box, holley twin barell carb, duel port heads, full set of 4 onto 1 extractors.

the thing i need to no is the specs that are requirements for the rollcage. everythin looks pretty safe. im only thinking bout joining the bendigo car club but i wanna make sure she is right to race.

the whole buggy got stripped and sanded back all the welds and re welded by a mate who is really good with a welder. to me personally, i wouldnt feel unsafe racing this car because of the effort ive personally put in to make it as safe as possible.

i spoke to the boys at the club and they sayd as long as its safe your good to race. (motorkhana, autocross, not finke haha).

any help on the situation would be greatly appreciated.

thanx again

Nath

Hey Nath,

Looking at your buggy Im not sure if it would be registerable under CAMS specifications. Do you know what material its made from? Size and wall thicknesses? Judging by the pics it would require substantial mods to get it up to spec so that you can get a CAMS log book for it, plus the addition of all the rquired safety gear for both you and the car.

Jump on the link that Jump1 put up and go through the manual, specifically the GR9 and also under the general requirements (http://www.camsmanual.com.au/10_gen_req.asp) check out schedule J, Safety Cage Structures.

As far as motorkhana and khanacross is concerned I think you'd be OK to compete with the buggy (much less stingent on safety requirements) but check with a local motorkhana club to make sure before you rock up to an event.

If I were you mate, Id talk to the guys at Bendigo car club and go out to a couple of events, talk to the drivers and get their input before you start making any changes - could save yourself a heap of time and money!
