Do i assume that if a kombi van has a 2 litre engine ,will it always from factory have a 2 litre gearbox? any info on kombi's would be handy really?just looking at buying an old van thats all.
How to tell. All air cooled Kombi boxes have ribs cast on the cases above & below the diff (where the CV joints attach ), they run right across the box & are very easy to see. On all boxes there is a little angled pad about 25mm x 10mm on the outer end of the rib directly below the CV joints, so disregard that angle. A 1600 box has 3 ribs only top & bottom, 1800 & 2000 boxes both have 5 ribs however the 1800 ribs top & bottom are made up of 3 flat surfaces each with about 30 degree sloped outer flats. The 2000cc box has all ribs smooth & rounded at the ends top & bottom. Hope this helps. I have found that because of the age of these great & wonderful vehicles that most have had a box change at sometime in their colourful lives so you could find any box in any model from 1968 to 1979 but 2.0 ltrs came out in 1976. If you find a 2.0 ltr box with a 1600 or 1800 motor it will have a different bell housing fitted but that is easy fixed.

also on the right side of the main casing is the part number its unside down when still in thne car , the first 3 digits are what your looking for
the 1800 starts with - 002
the 2.0l starts with -091
if you lokk at some of the US web sites this is what they refer to , not the engine size also the same when you order parts from albins , hope this helps
