Torsion Bars

I am after a bit of advice as I have changed the rear of my buggy to coil overs, but I am sure I have gone way too light on the spring rates. (250lb and 125lb) over 12inches travel.

Has anyone used torsion bars as well as coil overs and are there any benefits or down sides.

The housings are still there for the torsion bars with adjusters, so it isn't any effort to just refit the bars as well as the coil overs.

hey peter, not sure what buggy you have,i have just put coil overs on my car,i have250/300lb springs on the front and its a bit soft,so theirs no way it would hold the back up,i run 29mm torsion bars in the rear, but i had to lower the buggy 40mm to get my cv angle down,i threw a set of 275/300lb coils on with no preload to help the torsion bars out, testing i thought it wasnt too bad, when we did colo it was drivable,BUT i think too stiff over the rough but good on the smooth and the jumps(definitely putting lighter springs on the rear)fronts needs to be played with,i think the light springs good but need to go heavier on the main,my advice was it has to hold the buggy up then you drive and play with it,thats what i did and it was good enough to race with on a rough track, the other problem with to soft a springs when you pretension them you can get coil bind, which is the problem im having with the front, there are quite a few cars running torsion bars and coil overs(can cost a lot to get the right spring package, wasted springs)so if your budgeting throw the bars in as well ,they wont slow you down,,,

Cheers for that and congrats on the Colo win.
I am definitely budgeting so I guess the bars are in. I did the spring rate calculator on the FOA website and must have messed it up big time.
The torsion bars held up well and have been there since 93 so I guess if it aint broke.
The main reason for the coil overs is that the bars were at full adjustment and the four R/R shocks had the coil over fittings.
The bar is 23mm so I will back it off and use the coils as adjusters.
Nice Vid also mate. they do an awesome job with the editing.

tine , looking at your incar , made me think mabe the front needs more compression valving to control the wheel movment a bit more , looks like the ride hight isn't to bad so im thinking spring rate is close , just an observation though ,

it does work pretty good, the rear is stepping out quite bad, never did before,so im thinking too stiff in the rear,in the video up the hill,it wasnt using anywhere near enough travel ,the front feels good but its bottoming out in the coils,so i need to stiffen it up a little,i could live with it the way it is,but its far too tailie to be fast,,,,
