Hey Jonesy, looks like a shit load of fun. If they want to get adults (big teens) involved then they need to get more than 450 bike engines involved. My Kato 525 puts out around 65hp with minimal mods and weighs around 115kg with minimal mods (not including 98kg of me). How much do the Karts weigh ?? I would be thinking that about 150 hp to 180hp would be a good compromise for a Kart depending on their weight. Power to weight ratio is whats its about. What does everyone else think ? i would like 200hp but who knows? What do you think?

Blacky, I thought the same thing. But when these karts are on a purpose built track the 450cc is plenty, any more power and you might as well look at full size buggies. I think they weigh around 250kg and the motor puts out around 50hp. My 200RS does 75kph flat out with me in it, while it is too slow for an adult, its plenty for the kids, especially on a tight track!
To say that you and your boys had fun on the weekend would seem to be an understatement. I think that you summarised the feeling of watching the young blokes driving one of these very well. Very interested in seeing a comparison between the AOK and the TK and if they could be combined in a class then more numbers ..... which is a win for the sport. At this point in time and the kart is still limited I have been beside my oldest bloke Toby (7) and he has been able to acheive 60km/h in the AOK.
I agree that this is not fast in the open, but add corners and jumps and whoops and that is plenty fast enough.
How did you find the TK to accelerate? I thought the AOK to be slow off the line - cant spin the wheels in loose dirt but again they are still limited on the throttle cable.
To say that I am really keen on a 450 would be and understatement. My only worry is my size hahahahaha
Hi Chris, the 200 is a manual gearbox (motorbike engine/chain drive), so it easily will spin the wheels if you drop the clutch, it accelerates how you expect that size motor to go on a motorbike, and the gears are close together.
The 9hp TK built car was useless, probably similar to an indoor go-kart hire kart. The last few races it did not have any brakes, but as the kids said to me they were nearly breaking off the accelerator pedal and brakes still not required! It broke a belt last heat, which was brand new at the start, but I have been told it was lucky to get that far. (apparently in USA they change the belt every heat?) All I can say that I am so glad they were not introduced to Aussie.
The 13hp JR1 style of Franc Gadaletta (not sure how to spell his name?), would be built very similar to an AOK. It was a little slower out of the corners, but definately had slightly more top speed as it went down the straight. It was a honda engine, ported head, motorbike carby and exhaust. It seized the bigend during the race, so i assume it was too many rpm's? Also not sure how the CVT belt would have held up?
There are 3 classes anyway, which is JR1 style, 200, and 450cc. But what is good is that when AOK's come and join us, they will be combined with 200 heats, will still be competitive, but will be chasing the JR1 trophy. You going to come and race Griffith next year with your boys Chris?
Rumour is that the demo 200RS sold today, and there is serious interest from lots of people....so get your orders in!
Will be keeping an eye out for news on Griffith for next year. As long as the date doesn't clash with our BMX racing or one of my races - if I ever find motivation to put my buggy back together :)
1st race is Renmark APR 27 & 28 which is also the 'celebrity race'. Other races will also happen regularly at Renmark. Finke will possibly have an organised race same weekend as the Finke event? Griffith will still be getting a track, but for probably later in the year!
By the end of Feb, there should be around 40-50 Trophykarts in Australia, so I am sure the tracks will be popping up everywhere!
