Gearbox problems

My kombi 1800 gearbox is jumping out of second gear under acceleration, all other gears are fine. (All gears are albins) It's not the linkage as I have disconnected it and problem still is there. Has anyone else had this issue and what was the cause ?

if its not linkage or gearbox moving around it could be a few things, the gear gets worn where the dogs slide into, the shaft is moving(bearings circlips)or what mine did, fork moved on the shaft, either way box has to come apart,,,,,

my guess would be that either your pinion bearing worn/damaged or the pinion bearing nut has come loose, as 1st & 2nd gear selectors are on the pinion/output shaft, so generally if it is popping out of 2nd under acceleration its caused by the pinion shaft trying to push itself away from the crown wheel. Accelerate in first and if the gearshift moves, that would confirm it. Otherwise as tine suggest it's probably a fork moved.

Something to think about, even though you have all Albins gears it's my bet that you have 2nd hand VW selector sleeves & hubs. When inspecting these prior to use the reverse angle on the interal dog teeth in the sleeve is often overlooked & is very often worn as even in road use 2nd gets a hard time & anything but the correct shape on the teeth will force itself out of gear either on acelleration or decelleration or both depending on the wear.

We have checked all the alignment of gears and shift forks they all seem fine, the dog teeth on 2nd gear was only slightly worn and no more than the other gears. When the gearbox was apart when I first had this problem we changed the synchro hub/slider with stock used one and put new springs in before milbrodale and problem was still there. Can new sliders be bought anywhere ?

Albins? . How good is your engine adapter plate & spiggott bearing, missalignment of input shaft can cause gears to jump out too. Does it jump out when decelerating as well as under load?

Will check the spiggot bearing but the adaptor plate is fine I have used it without problem before. The times it does hold in gear decelaration is fine. I will have to get gearbox stripped down again and checked out, and see if there are any signs of wear and try and track down some new parts.

I have 2 vw boxes - both with broken crown wheel and pinion gears.  One is an 1800 the other 2000 Kombis.  They both have Albins gears. They were working fine untill the diff broke.  If you are interested I would sell them at $500 each.
