The Off Road Warehouse COLO Park Challenge 17/18th November
The last round of the NSW Off Road Racing Championship for 2012 will be taking place this weekend at COLO Park. The home of Sydney Off Road Racing Association, right here in the Hawkesbury. Track is in top condition, with the rain helping to consolidate the softer sections and keep the dust down to a minimum for some top, close racing. This is the last chance to put names in the record books for the 2012 NSW Championship & although some classes have been decided, namely Super 1650 and Sportsman. Both of these cars need to run this weekend to decide the Top Point scorer and the outright driver Champion.279 Derek Rose from Warialda in his Super 1650 has won his class for the year, as has 335 Gary Hyde in his Sportsman class buggy. At this point Gary is winning the Top points score for the year & Derek is leading in the Outright drivers Championship, both by very small margins , either of these guys could take either or both depending on their results this race. 405 Paul Grant from Llandilo would have been the only fly in the ointment, but having done an engine at his last outing, is unable to compete this meeting.
Mark-Paul Grant (son of Paul) will be competing in his truck 507 along with other local cars,. Steve Taylor from Cattai in his Prolite 181, Wayne Murphy of Vineyard666 UTV, Alex Powe 164 of Oakville bringing his out for its first run after a major rebuild, Ally Howells in her Toyota V8 powered truck, Brother Joshin his Sportsman 305, along with other Sydney club members from further afield. Other Clubs members racing this event come from the Warialda Club, Hunter Valley Off Road club, Kempsey Off Road, Crookwell Off Road, and the Nabiac Off Road club.
83 Peter Skaza and 94 Rikki Hedley are both on the same points in the Pro class, with Malcolm And Leona Bird 66 waiting in the wings if they make any mistakes. In the Prolite class,111 Mark Sankey could tie for the 3rd spot if122 Scott McNeil has any problems.
In the Super 1650 class ,there is 4 cars fighting for the second and third spots with only a few point separating them. 247 Mark Cowie is the leading contender with 280 Michael Densley, then 258 Warren Barron, then 229 Adam Barnacoat making for an interesting duel.
Extreme 2WD has last years winner of the class 424 Kristy Hedley fighting it out for 2nd& 3rd with 481sMarty & Sean Del-Santos. Both are quick and spectacular to watch and with the jump in the main arena now refurbished, we should see lots of air & distance. 25 to 30 metres maybe more, should be impressive. The jump at this new height will be new to most of the competitors.
In the Performance 2WD class, Jan Hedley in her F100 truck will be fighting hard to keep Ashley Weinert at bay with 25 points on offer and 12 points the difference between them. This will also see 510 Murray Collins, 555 Darren Machal,505 Ally Howells and Mark-Paul Grant 507 making up the biggest contingent of this class to compete at COLO Park. Again something special to watch.
There will be three UTV class machines running, all Polariss entered by Snake Racing. The 666 Polaris will be driven by local Wayne Murphy. These machines are relatively new on the scene and are surprising quite a few with their performance. Extreme 4WD class will see Steve Logan 879 up against some tuff competition in the form of 844 Matt Dunk, a newcomer to the sport ( convert from rock Crawling) who isfeaturing in the top results at each outing so far and the 888 car of David OGrady.
Colo Park is 61 Klms from the Windsor bridge on the right hand side of the road, when you reach the COLO HEIGHTS Service station only 20Klms more ,signs & bunting at the entrance on main road. This is as close as Off Road racing gets to any Capital City in Australia and your best chance to check it out.
Entry for spectators is free, camping is free. The Canteen is open all weekend with a sit down dinner on Saturday night . Come along see the vehicles close up and watch all the action of Off Road Racing live.
I can tell you Vern was there in your old car and the first time he drove it was the prologue, had a good weekend getting used to the car and drove it on the trailer and took it as well as the 1st in prolite trophy home with him.
