well, i have been asked to install a center rail on my single seater. and i noticed all the ones i have seen dont have a single rail down the middle.
this is going to cause some big problems with mine, as it will line up perfect with the torsion bar adujster housing . and second im going to have to lift the seat to clear the new bar.
what i would like to do is install a single bar down the centre where ya feet go. and then two smaller bars run under seat?
or even run two bars from centre just under the foot well, diagonal to each corner of the torsion housing? this is prob best option, as it makes three triangles and well all know they are stronger the squares and it will fix my seat issues.
2.2 Acceptable alternative designs/method of construction: (a) Two or more chassis centre rails are permitted or CAMS may consider alternative configurations which achieve a similar outcome in strengthening the floor area of the chassis.
straight out of the cams book, does that mean mine is acceptable as it is single seat? they are the ones that gave the log book in first place back in 99..
anyway little confused what to do. as i just had the dam thing powder coated as well
i wasnt aware the single seat needed it. i can single twin seaters needing it but single seat?
i guess there is a lot of single seat cars that need to install them..
anyway just chasing some thoughts on some options.

I THOUGHT IT WAS PIETTY STUPID THAT 3 CARS THERE TODAY DIDNT HAVE THE CORRECT CENTRE RAIL ,BUT ONLY ONE WAS TOLD HE HAD TO PUT ONE IN BECAUSE TWO CARS WHERE PRE 1998, YET THE CARS BEFORE 1998 WOULD BENEFIT FROM IT MORE . OH WELL THATS ONE OF CAMS GREAT RULES
yeah i have seen a lot of cars even after 98 that dont have them. there is a a few cars in for sale section that dont have the. one being a aussie jimco. thing that is more annoying is it has been like it for over 10 years and not picked up untill i got the chassis all powder coated. had it been before that. i wouldnt care lol
surely there is some kind of spacing that needs to be achieved? before the centre rail needs to be installed? like the front roof rails have before they need a vertical support?
I just hope mine passes ok after I've just done all this work one of the reasons I went with spray cans from bunnings and not powdercoating was u never know when cams will change their mind and want some new bar put in or they want floor mountings changed to every 50mm or something like that

yeah i hear you, but them kind of rules come in over a period of time. not between races, worst thing was this rule came in 1998 . and has dont som many races since then lol.
red mist yes that is correct, rang cams today and he said it shouldnt even have a log book. will know more tomorrow and tine, yes they said it needs to be there are per jr9
I could be wrong but if you wanted to spend some money, you could get an engineer to have a look at it and if he is happy issue a certificate. Then it doesn't need a centre spine.
i built 3 buggies in my time including the one i sold to u and they have all been built to the cams manual regs at the time. i feel that u have taken the car to a scrutineer that really knows the early regs well and amazingly picked up that the car was 6 months over the due date for the centre rail in which i didnt even know of . i am frustrated for u as i know that frame was built off the 97/98 manual and maybe if cams had chassis numbers in those days i could of dated the frame in 98 but cams will only issue a log book if u have a photo of the completed car front and rear ,and guess when i did that. Hopefully u will sort it and promise me u will take your frustration out on the track and flog all those other prolites in that sr20 powered LATE model single seater.
ps i originally wrote 500+ word reply to this thread but had a scotch and calmed down and come up with this .
Sorry for saying so, but isn't the centre rail a stupid regulation? It adds no structural strength to the car (triangles are strongest of the geometric shapes). The only thing I could see it being of any use is in a position where you jumped on a large obstruction and punched through the floor pan. Personally I'd much rather see crossbracing from the main roll hoop to the forward toe (hangers) area. Think if I do venture your way I'll engineer report mine.
im just going to install it, much easier lol, and since my chasis is pre 2000 i dont need a cage number if i want. single line to crutch bar then two rails back to the torque tube. screw the powder coat :(
According to the General Requirements you can have more than 1 centre rail, so Redmist I can't see yours being a problem. I do remember a minimum distance before you needed a centre rail on a single seater but it has obviously been removed from the manual.
This is another argument for class representatives to consult on behalf of the competitors with CAMS.
2.2 Acceptable alternative designs/method of construction:
(a) Two or more chassis "centre" rails are permitted or CAMS may consider alternative configurations which achieve a similar outcome in strengthening the floor area of the chassis.
seems to be confusing one, anyway in the long run i will just put the rail and then send it to cams to get the sticker . as mine all ready has a chassis number
A Cross would Certainly be stronger in single seat cars. It is frustrating as hell when welding in parts you know are not the strongest / safest option. A double X in this design would of helped to stiffen the base frame significantly.
