Floater hubs

Hi everyone, I need some advise. What is the right way to set preload on floater hubs. Initially I ran them with the preload shim but suffered from really bad pad knock and the hubs had way too much play. I know of people who do not use the shims and adjust similar to front hubs. However with floaters it is much more critical to get this right, too loose and forget about having effective rear brakes, too tight and potential to wreck the bearings or worse. Anyone out there using albins or summers bros floater hubs been through a similar experience and know how to set these things up properly.

You must run the shims !!!! If the hubs were too loose you need to get the shims surface ground until there is no movement in the hub, basically you should barely be able to turn the hub by hand with the shims at the correct thickness.
If you want it done properly Albins will grind shims for you, I sent them my whole arms and hubs and they sent it all back set up correctly and I ran them for about 2 1/2 years with no issues.
Don't get talked into running without shims it will create so many problems

Thanks Lamby. I rang Albins about getting some thinner shims made and found out I may not be tighteneing them enough. Put a long extension on my socket and was able to get an extra 1/4-1/2 turn. Will give it a run and see how it goes.
