i have the vw front style beam and i keep breaking it, mainly the power steering ram and its mounts. i have ripped the ram off the rack a number of times. and then also broken the ram off chassis once.
and then recently broken the ram eye clean open. also stripped the spline in a steering uni.
when the ram breaks off the chassis i can not hold the steering wheel, as it just rips left and right.
so im thinking bumpb steer. but i can figure it out. i have taken steering apart shocks off and moved the suspesion through its travel and it does not move the tie rod.
mark cowie mentioned that it might be the new wheels as they have a different off set and move my tyre centre further away from the kingpin centre.
this has been going on for 12 months now. and i can figure out why. i have not done a race where i have not had steering problems
yeah i will try and get some i have heaps on the phone. it just dont make sense. the first time it broke off the rack, ok replaced that, next time it ripped off the chassis, repalced that then it broke off the rack again. fixed that, now it has ripped open the eye of the ram and broke weld in steering coloum
just measured my scrub radius and we are sitting at 4 1/4" so possible that is increase, as new wheels have a negative off set where as old wheels were zero. and that with the 30" tyres. could all be loading it up
Should be more than that, at least 8 or 10, it would be very twitchy and try and steer itself, more angle
Will self centre the steering better And track a lot Straighter.
ok plan is, new beam same spacing as the link pin spacing on king pin, and then lean the beam back 10 degrees. so i will have 10 degrees static castor, and 2 degrees camber. and then go from there.

sorry was a little confused, my camber is 2 degrees. im going to build a new front beam, and do i need to make it the same distance centre to centre as the king pin? as currently mine is not.
also i'm going to lean the beam back slightly more. i think 12 degrees but have been told to lean it back 15 degrees to the bottom chassis rail.
ok after talking to a few people it looks like it is the 4 1/4 " of scrub radius i have that is causing the problem, the leaver:(stub axle) is actually longer then the lever for tie rod to king pin.
so i have two options change wheels. to a different off set need to at least reduce it by 2" or change the front front hubs. as well as i have rather large calipers on mine
ok well, we have it sorted. custom wheels with a large back space. as the scrub radius with btr wheels was 4.5" lol with custom wheels im around 2.5" :)
hopefully that will solve my problem. will make it lighter on the steering anyway
