smart wiring


anyone had any experience with smart wiring?  we are building a class 5 and are at the stage of looking into wiring.  we are unsure whether to bite the bullet to spend the money eliminating fuses, relays etc and get it done or to go old school and save some $.

are they worth the money, can it be a DIY job or better off paying someone to do it properly.  are they hard to diagnose when plugging the laptop in if youre not a computer nerd?

ill jump in on behalf of gavin if he doesn't mind! from all the people ive spoken to, including gavins suggestion, it seems to be the ducks guts and certainly the way to go, especially if starting from scratch as we are. it is the dearer option initially but for the headaches it can save down the track I think I will pay the few extra $
ill update this thread when things happen giving cost examples.

i really dont see the point? hard to diagonse when you on the side of the track with out your laptop.
why not just run solid states relays and a resetable circuit breaker? problem free. and easy to fix if need be on the side of track or in a hurry.

just buy your self a label maker designed for heat shrink .

make it super simple.

Nothing of the sort. Smart Wiring doesn't give you any performance or reliability or workload advantage. ECU's certainly do. Modern ECU's also interface to devices that indicate faults. (such as digital dashes, LED's), and can be reconfigured with a simple switch.

My 20c, it just adds complexity and cost to a solution that doesn't necessarily need to be either complex or costly.

The logic can be integrated into an ECU (which becomes your single store of all logic), the switches, relays and CB's are all simple historically reliable devices that don't require much in the way of diagnostics.
