RE: Off Road Historic Racing - your thoughts?

I think limiting tyre heights to 31" is fair - was anyone running bigger tyres than that in 1990? As for steel wheels only, naaa. Heaps of guys were running centerlines without beadlocks so I reckon any non-beadlocked rim should be period correct.

Feel free to contradict! I wasnt racing in 1990 so no doubt people will know more than me. :)

Im the spirit of KISS -

Pre 1990 log book
Beam front end only up to 4" over
Axle length restricted to X inches to restrict the rear end.

Evidently bypass were in use, but I dont think they're really representative of Australian offroad racing in 1990 - Neville Boyes' rivmasta would be indicative I think.

Re production gearboxes - talking the boys, perhaps production gearboxes arent such a good idea - a full house porsche box would be just as exe as an AGB but not as strong. Kinda the same argument as using a modern engine as the older ones are too hard to find and therefore expensive. Perhaps no sequential and no torque coverters? Not sure about this one.

I know there are a few cars out there currently being restored (dont want to rain on anyone's parade by mentioning who) but would love to see an old Rivvy or Trekka with Yokohama written down the side running sea lake. :) There are a few old stadium cars which are being dusted off too. :)

OK, so after a few phone calls and entries on here - how does this sound for a buggy spec? Interesting I had a suggestion for under 2 litre and over 2 litre to even out the playing field.  It was noted that anyone who shoe horned a 6ltre in would run away with the class. FYI - I like the idea of putting a "H" after the number. :)

Mission statement:
To race historic off road vehicles representative to the cars raced pre 1991 in period colour and signage.
To provide a group within the current rules and classes for older cars to race each other, with emphasis placed on spirit of the class, enjoyment of racing the vehicles, and keeping cost to minimum.

Front end:
Beam only, Maximum trailing arm length 4" over standard. No bypass. No bead locks

Rear end:
No floaters. Axle length restricted to X inches. No bypass. No bead locks.

Gearbox:
Any H pattern up to 5 speed, no sequential, no torque converters

Engine:
Historic: Free, NA 2001cc to 6000cc
Historic Lite: Free NA up to 2000cc

Chassis:

Log booked the first time prior to 1991
Must meet all current safety standards and Triennial inspection

Safety items:
Must meet all current CAMS rules for buggies.

Still a few questions to be asked:

Should tyre heights be restricted?
Should shock shafts/length be restricted?
Should gearbox be syncro only? IE no dog boxes?
Should turbos be allowed?
Should there be 2 historic groups in buggies?
What about tintops?

What started as a hypothetical discussion on a semi-private forum is actually escalating. :)  Nice.

I would allow turbo's. they were around in the period & provide cheap horsepower.

Just my opinion.

The best thing I've read about in years. I use to race the sister car to peter glovers hornet. Steven Lunns hornet .It run a turbo G200 rodeo engine and porsche box. But we upgraded the front end to top mount coil over shocks and then fitted an Sr20det. My question is if i was to run this car in the H class would it need to be converted back to the bottom mount shocks ect.

Allow turbos and put them all in with the > 2Ltr group maybe?

Hey Nigel!  Good to talk to you again yesterday mate, its been too long! :)

As per the consensus above, you wouldn't need to change it if the arms are 4" over or less and didnt have bypass shocks on it.  It would slot straight into the 2Ltr "lite" group with an NA, or "pro" if you kept the hairdryer if thats the way the regs go.  You'd still need to add the extra bar above the hip rail and maybe some other mods to get it passed for the triennial inspection and bring it up to current safety specs I think.

Do you know where your old car is? You might end out in the same boat as 260 where the trail runs dry.

260 is out at Mudgee. Had about 5 motors in it and two owners and still can't get it to run properly.
Hoping to see it at the COLO round 15/16th November. SORRA's last Club round for 2014
Back to other subject. The cars with hairdryers would still be in same classes as normal competition but in the H class at the same time?

Cool. :)

Yeah, thats how I read it. They would be pro class in Pro Historic "group" would be my suggestion. :)

I would include turbo's across both classes but I have a vested interest. The engine in my old girl was made in 88 so is within the period.

haha. I hear you.  But even under the old rules if it was 1.6Ltr with a turbo it would have been in pro class back then anyways.

I think that keeping in spirit of the class we leave the 2Ltr group as NA to bring the old class 2 and 3s out of the sheds to compete against each other. :)  Sound good?

it's 930cc, currently runs as a class 2. 930 x 1.7 is 1581. it's even well under 1650.

But I'm not going to argue. Love the concept  hope it brings heaps of old cars out. It can only be good for the sport.

Hi all who are followign this thread.

Had a couple more discussions last night and had a few more suggestions - let me know what you think:

  • Create a historic group within each class in line with the old class structure - IE:
  • Class 4H
  • Class 3H
  • Class 2H
  • Class 1H etc

Restrict to 31" tyres to be period correct, and to cut down costs

Instead of creating 2 groups with the capacity cut off at 2000cc, use 1650 instead to bring more class 3 and class 6 cars out of the sheds

No turbos

Prod gearboxes only

I'll put together a series of polls later with all the options that have been listed in this thread and see what the results are. Should make an interesting read!

Having a historic section in classes sounds like a great idea and sounds like a perfect way to bring out old cars. However the non turbo thing I see as an issue. My car was built in 1981. It has a 930cc turbo charged engine (1581cc with multiplication factor) that was manufactured in 1988. Under these rules I wouldn't be eligible to compete in it. The turbo multiplication factor has been around forever and there was plenty of old cars that were built and raced in that era with turbos. For example if I was to have one of Craig martins old rivmastas with a turbo pulsar engine it wouldn't be eligible. There are a lot of old cars in sheds from this era that were turbo charged. Personally I wouldn't change my engine to be eligible as I see it as a way of also finding a home for old cars like Mine that are nowhere near the modern cars in classes, and qualifies with all the other regulations discussed. I think it would be unfortunate to not allow turbos from that era and would make a lot of cars inaligable. Really good to see that old cars may have a purpose soon!

There has been a bit of discussion around the club re an Historic class. One thing that hasn't been mentioned till now is power steering. I would ban it for these cars. I think to make historic cars non power steering is a great leveller. You can drive much quicker with it, you can hit things harder with it (wears out components quicker) & as a driver you get much less fatigued with it. If they were all manual steer I think the differences in the engine capacities would be minimal. With that in mind my restrictions would be as follows.

Minimum 20 year old beam chassis, modified to suit current triennial inspection criteria.

H pattern gearbox.

Rear torsion housing with bars.

Engine, probably period. I don't think that with the rest of the restrictions that engines matter. Maybe a maximum of a four cyl with a turbo. The rest just as per class capacities.

No bypass.

Restricted axle length.

31" Tyres maximum.

Manual steering.

Lets keep this rolling & hopefully get some cars out of sheds & back on the track.

Hi Daryl, glad youre still interested in this thread mate, but I think the concept (at least here) has kinda died a quiet death.

I'd love to see any club in Aus have a crack at it tho!

It's one of those things that I think will gather momentum once there are a couple of cars actually out there & racing. Happy to keep pushing it as I believe it will get some people back into the sport & having fun.

Our club did the datto class a fair while ago, I believe we can get this one up as well. The big advantage these days is social media, once it's up & running everyone will know about it.
