I can only go by what we do. But we run (with 2GR 3500cc Toyota) a very simple and inexpensive setup.
From the tank to a Bosch 044 pump and then a 373 fuel filter (falcon I think) then into the injectors. Very simple and easy to maintain. Never (touch wood) had a fuel related issue.
i run from the tank into a z168(that's my surge tank)into a single 044,,never had any fuel issues either,would be a little concerned not running a filter between tank and pump though,,,
I dont run any separate surge tanks etc. I believe it is just more stuff to go wrong (My opinion). I have a little pot at the base of my tank where the lines come out and return to. I have been told (and believe) the 044 are a ball bearing pump and they pass the crappy bits in the tank with no dramas. Once again... only what I have found and do myself.
Have you thought about using the Holley HydraMat instead of the low pressure side?
You could feed a single 044 without the need for a surge tank, pump and filter on that side.
Cell foam will keep the Hydramat at the bottom of the cell. Foam is also designed to limit fire given a breach of cell.
Hydramat is very new. If it had of been released a few months prior to me putting the system in my car I'd be sans a Holley Black pump, a filter and a surge tank. It may seem expensive. But by the time you add up pump, filter, surge tank, fittings and mounting I bet it not only provides a cleaner solution, but cheaper.
