a few more questions

hey guys, i appreicate you all taking the time out to answer my questions about the sport.

i have a few more though.

Wolf- i was looking at your build-up and noticed the large amount of front rake built into the front A arms, from my understanding this would make the front dive heavily under brakes.  i was wondering wether this is done to shift more weight to the front to help corner better???

i was also wondering if someone could be able to post some dimensions (wheelbase, track, weight) of a typical class 2 A arm car.

Is it possible to mount the motor in front of the diff?  or would the front get to heavy (especially when jumping)..  i saw a pic of a mid-mounted buggy somewhere but can't find it now.

i recieved my CAMS book and have read the relevant articles through,  i am now thinking the motorbike motor may not be such a good idea because of the weight (I know it has already been mentioned), so am thinking all my time and money could be spent in class 2.  i am not really sure at the moment just trying to get myself to a couple of events in Vic to have a look around the pits etc.

Thanks again for the time taken to respond to my threads.

Wheel base: 115 to 120 inches

Track: 2 to 2.2 meters, you could go wider.

Weight: Depending on the size and the amount of bracing, but don't skip on safety, also remember it's a class 2 so try and keep it as light as possible. Try and aim for under 1000kg would be good.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Michael

Here is a link to a bike powered buggy that sounds similar to your project.
It has some dimensions on it for a comparison.
Hope it helps.

Hey Luke,

The front rake serves a couple of purposes, firstly departure angle for ground clearance, it also makes life easier for setup to get the 8deg of static caster we were after when it was put together.

To make up for excessive dive, anti-dive adjustment has been built into the a-arms, though some dive is required to get it to turn in.

Re dimensions for an A-Arm cl2 car, I think Micks pretty close to the money.  Our car was designed as a class 2 and its 115" by 2.2m.  Anthony Lia's new beam car is the same footprint, as is The Beast.

Micks also right when it comes to weight - class 2 means that less weight is free horsepower!  Michael Spokes (216) has arguably the fastest cl 2 car in NSW and its a fairly standardly setup Rivmasta with a good engine/gearbox combo and a freakishly good driver behind the wheel.

Mid mount is done alot with class 10 cars in the states (our class 2) but most class 1's are rear mount. I believe there are more mid-mount cl10 cars as traction is less of an issue due to lack of torque.  Mid mount is doable,  but you may need to go a bit more exotic with the gearbox than the traditional kombi box.  Renaults will do it, mendiola, albins etc and probably porsche as well.  Basically you'd be looking a more $$$, but its doable, and technically the most efficient way of doing it for handling puposes... on asphalt at least.

Most of the bigger class 1 cars tend to have the engine slung in the back for traction... but it doesnt seem to have affected Brad Proud's car much, and its got an LS1 in it!

Class 2 is a top class in NSW state rounds.  we had a blast doing it with our old rivvy (may she rest in pieces).

Obviously toyota/kombi is probably the best power to weight combo you can put together without getting into big bucks (vtec) and put that into in a reasonably light frame = awesome, awesome fun on a not impossible budget.

In saying that though, the 1UZ-FE is on the engine stand getting preped to go into our new car at the moment!

I WANNA GO RACING!!!!!!

Anyway... blah blah.  Get into the pits, talk to the people, get involved with the club if you've got the time and you'll be surprised how many mistakes you'll avoid and also where to get what parts, work done etc at the best price.
