Sadly Dick Watman passed away recently. His funeral was held today & it was good to see a smattering of off roaders there to pay their respects & support the family. My condolances to his wife Sylvia, sons Bruce, Glen & Chris.
Dicks involvement in off road racing was initially as a driver, racing an old Verco Hustler in Class 3 #360. Whilst I'm not sure exactly when he started racing, he did place 3rd in the 1986 SRVA Class 3 Championship to Bob Mowbray & Grant Walker. Dick naturally introduced his three sons to the sport with eldest son Bruce finishing 2nd that same year as his navigator to Jeanette Mowbray. That same year Bill Croft was Club Champion. By 1988 Dick was no longer driving full time with Bruce & no. 2 son Glen taking over the car now with a bigger Class 2 engine on board #286. Bruce & Glen went on to become Australian Class 3 Off Road Champions driving for Team Goodyear in a car designed by Dick at Bond Roll Bars - the BRB frame, then later with youngest son Chris moving into Stadium Racing. The race cars were always professionally prepared & presented, a testament to his skill & dedication as a race car builder. One always knew where you stood with Dick as he always called a spade a spade (or possibly a bloody shovel) & didn't suffer fools gladly. He was one of racings gentlemen & we are worse off for his passing. Vale Dick Watman 1943 - 2004.
